On Saturday, March 8th, Fort Pierce Central Cobras proudly volunteered at the 17th annual Empty Bowls event benefiting the Treasure Coast Food Bank. The Empty Bowls project is a national campaign to fight hunger and end food insecurity in communities. The Empty Bowl is a symbol representing that one in four children in America still doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from. Patrons pick out a handmade or wheel-thrown bowl for $25 and get a to-go bowl of yummy soup donated by local restaurants. The potters from Indian River Clay also donated silent auction artworks. Pictured above are Ceramics II student Jordan Wright and the buyer of her goose bowl, a Michigan resident and Florida Vacationer. Students saw first hand, the difference their work makes not only in our community but the country.
At the sea wall of the beautiful Fort Pierce Farmers Market, Cobras placed cards, wrapped bowls, and restocked tables while greeting friendly faces and enjoying a purpose-filled morning. Students took pride in their work knowing that art can be beautiful, functional, and philanthropic. FPC art teacher Mrs. Avra has been doing Empty Bowls at Fort Pierce Central for a decade and is extremely proud of the Ceramics I, II, and III-Honors students for their dedication and effort in this worthy project. Junior and Senior AICE Art & Design students also volunteered continuing to be a part of an exceptional opportunity to give back to our beloved community.
Thank you to all the Cobra volunteers: Kherington Neikirk, Carmin Ortiz, Carina Weisfeld, Paytin Herndon, Mia Reyes-Ramirez, Jordan Wright, Bruno Rojas Rivadeneira, Keyla Mendez, Mia Iken, Brionna Williams, and Suleima Belmontes-Zamora. Fort Pierce Central along with Westwood Academy and St. Lucie West Centennial raised over the $15,000.00 in proceeds which equates to 120,000 simple meals, absolutely amazing!
