Criminal Justice Program students from Fort Pierce Westwood Academy, Fort Pierce Central High School, St. Lucie West Centennial High School, and Treasure Coast High School had a unique opportunity to celebrate Constitution Day through an engaging, hands-on mock trial experience at the St. Lucie County Courthouse. Working alongside judges, attorneys, court staff, law enforcement personnel, and community volunteers, students explored the landmark case Elonis v. United States and examined how constitutional rights apply to modern social media communication.
The morning began with civility and courtroom procedure activities before students took on the roles of attorneys and jurors. Guided by volunteer attorney coaches, students prepared arguments, participated in oral arguments before the court, deliberated as juries, and reached verdicts. The experience concluded with a question-and-answer session led by the judges, providing students with valuable insight into the judicial system and legal careers.
Special appreciation goes to Chief Judge Schwab, Judge Sweet, Judge Heisey, Judge Mish, Clerk Miller, the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit, the St. Lucie County Bar Association, the Friends of the Rupert J. Smith Law Library, participating attorneys, courthouse staff, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, and law library personnel whose collaboration made this meaningful learning experience possible.
Through this immersive Constitution Day event, students gained firsthand knowledge of civic responsibility, constitutional law, civil discourse, and the important role the judicial system plays in our democracy. Programs like this exemplify the powerful partnerships that connect classrooms to future careers.
