Central Receives Rachel Ray Grow Grant

Chef Cindy Swertfager was thrilled to receive the Rachel Ray Grow Grant to enhance the culinary experience for students in the Culinary 1/2 classroom. This generous grant of five thousand dollars has enabled us to make significant strides towards transforming our culinary classroom into a dual-purpose classroom and kitchen lab, equipped with modern, professional-grade equipment.

The grant funds were promptly utilized to purchase essential equipment to elevate our culinary classroom. With the awarded funds, we successfully acquired:

  • Nine Metal Prep Tables: These tables have provided ample space for students to work on their culinary creations, promoting better organization and workflow within the classroom.
  • Nine Induction Burners: The induction burners have replaced our outdated cooking equipment, offering a safer and more efficient cooking experience for our students. These burners are not only energy-efficient but also allow for precise temperature control.
  • New Oven: The addition of a new oven has significantly expanded our baking and roasting capabilities, allowing students to experiment with a wider range of culinary techniques and recipes.

Since the arrival of the new equipment, we have made remarkable progress in integrating it into our daily lessons and activities. The metal prep tables have fostered a more collaborative environment, as students can now work in groups and share their knowledge and skills with one another. The induction burners have been a game-changer, providing a safer alternative to traditional gas burners and allowing students to gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art technology. The new oven has opened up a world of possibilities for our baking lessons, enabling students to experiment with various baked goods, from cookies to bread.

The implementation of the Rachel Ray Grow Grant in our high school Culinary 1 classroom has been marked by several notable successes. One of the key successes was the procurement of essential equipment, including metal prep tables and induction burners. This process was incredibly smooth and efficient. We ordered the tables and burners from Amazon, and everything arrived in perfect condition, meeting our specifications and requirements. The swift delivery and quality of the equipment allowed us to promptly integrate them into our classroom, enhancing the learning experience for our students.

While we experienced significant successes, we also faced some challenges during the implementation process. One of the primary challenges was related to the installation of overhead hanging electrical plugs for each prep table. This required nine electrical outlets to be installed above the tables to accommodate the induction burners.

The challenge arose from the need for additional funds to cover the cost of this installation, as the school board was unable to provide this service. We had to secure additional funding and coordinate with an external electrical company to complete the installation. This process was time-consuming and required careful planning and collaboration to ensure that the electrical work was done safely and effectively without disrupting our classroom activities. Despite these challenges, we successfully overcame the obstacles and completed the necessary installations, allowing us to fully utilize the new equipment and create a more functional and efficient kitchen lab for our students.

One of the key lessons learned is the importance of a streamlined and reliable procurement process. Our success in ordering the metal prep tables and induction burners from Amazon demonstrated that selecting reputable vendors with efficient delivery and quality assurance processes can significantly reduce potential delays and issues. Ensuring clear communication with suppliers and verifying equipment specifications in advance can help ensure that the items meet our needs and expectations.

The experience underscored the importance of flexibility and adaptability in managing projects. Despite the challenges, we were able to adapt our approach and find solutions to overcome obstacles. Being open to alternative strategies and maintaining a positive attitude in the face of difficulties can help keep the project on track and achieve our goals.
