Northport K-8 students from the Northstar team were selected to present at this year’s Project Citizen Oral Hearings held recently at the Palm Beach Coounty Convention Center. Three of the five teams presenting were from St. Lucie County and two were from Miami-Dade County. The team from Northport K-8 School represented Mary Ellsworth’s sixth period class with their project, “Put Down the Fork and Pick Up the Pace.” The project centered around the issue of childhood obesity and how schools can help combat this increasing problem. With support from Northport administration, the PTO, Building Level Planning team, cafeteria staff and coaches, students were … Read More

Port St. Lucie High School honored its graduating seniors at the recent Senior Scholarship Night event. Collectively, the graduating Jaguars earned over $2,971,934 dollars in scholarships from colleges and universities. It has been a fun week for students at Gaines Academy with field days and the many activities Coach Camarotti and Coach Ellinger prepared.  Students from Andrea Blackburn’s fourth grade class are pictured preparing for the beach day relay. Students and families recently visited many countries while traveling around the world at Gaines Academy. Pictured with passports in hand are second grade student Jason Jacques in Mikki Greer’s class, and his sister Jennifer, a kindergartner in Leigh Chesney’s class upon arriving in Egypt, where they encounter a camel created by eighth graders in Paul Small’s class. They also saw a pyramid with mummies inside and hieroglyphic prints.

Fairlawn Elementary School fifth grade teacher Shirley Helton has been named the Distinguished Stock Market Challenge Advisor of the Year for the State of Florida for demonstrating excellence in teaching economics skills of free enterprise and financial literacy. Each year, the Florida Council on Economic Education and Publix Super Markets Charities recognize a Distinguished Stock Market Advisor who goes above and beyond in teaching children about how financial markets work, how to invest money, and entrepreneurship.  Helton’s fifth grade students this year won first place in the state Stock Market Challenge Elementary Division in the Fall Competition and second place in the state Spring … Read More

Students in John Davino’s seventh grade civics class at Samuel S. Gaines Academy created their own review board games to study for their upcoming final exam. The Palm Pointe symphonic band recently travelled to Atlanta, Georgia, to participate in a private clinic at Georgia State University held by the university’s band director. While they were there they were able to tour the CNN television studios and view a live taping. Some of their other activities included visiting the Coca Cola corporation museum as well as visiting the world’s largest aquarium. Students gained memorable experiences that will last a lifetime. Christine King’s sixth and seventh grade math students at Allapattah Flats K-8 are looking ahead to next year by exploring Box-and-Whisker Plots.  Box-and-Whisker Plots are diagrams that summarize data by dividing it into quartiles. Students surveyed other students around school, their parents and even other teachers. Students asked questions such as “How often do you get on the internet in one week?”  They then ordered their data, found the measures of variation and graphed their data on a Box-and-Whisker Plot. Pictured showing off their hardwork are Christine King and some of her students, from left, Matthew Gustin, Daniel Lopez, Cassidy Lanier, Alexis Tabora, Pricillia Samaroo, and … Read More

Allapattah Flats middle school staff and students recently competed in Battle of the Books. Each grade group had their own battle which was conducted as a game show. Sixth grade students read Freak the Mighty.  Sixth grade students were victorious and won the battle clearly showing their superior reading efforts. Seventh and eighth grade students and teachers read “The Hunger Games”. Selected third through fifth grade students from Danya Etter’s music class at Allapattah Flats K-8 participated in the end of the year, “An Adventure in Music,” spring concert. The program consisted of  a variety of songs from “You Raise Me Up” and Somewhere Over the Rainbow to  Boogie Woogie, and “Beethoven’s Wig”. The concert was a success. Palm Pointe Educatioinal Research School at Tradition has learned the school has the fourth highest combined fund raising total in the sstate for schools hosting both a Jump Rope for Heart event and a Hoops for Heart event. The school has raised approximately $14,000 over the past two years for the American Heart Association through the school’s two events as was highlighted in the most recent issue of the Florida Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance and sport journal.Robert Santoro, Kristen Stafford, and Dale Francis, Physical Education teachers at the school, coordinate the events. Kristin Helser, a local attorney practicing civil law, recently visited White City Elementary with her mother. The two guests addressed fifth grade students about the laws governing our state. Their commitment to helping the students of St. Lucie County is certainly valuable to our community and we are glad to have them as part of our White City family. Kindergarten students in Raynell Mowitt’s class at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition enjoy a Mother’s Day Tea with their moms. Each student videotaped a special message to their mom on why they are so special to them. Everyone enjoyed refreshments and spending time together.

Northport K-8 sixth grade students in Amanda Sartain’s science classes immersed themselves in a life sciences unit on immunology and the immune system of the human body by forming a living human cell. The students gathered in a circle in the front of the school and joined hands to form the cell. One student remained outside the cell to represent a nasty virus. The virus burst into the cell and chose one person at a time to come into the cell and spread. Kate Klise, author of “Dying To Meet You,” one of this year’s Sunshine State books, visited Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently to discuss her books and give tips to our future authors.  Ms. Klise also gave a non-fiction writing workshop for selected sixth graders.
