The Giving Trees are a long standing tradition at Rivers Edge Elementary. Every grade has a Christmas tree on the stage in the cafeteria representing a local organization. Students and staff bring in donations for the organization the grade has chosen. They are placed under the tree for the campus to see. Once again this year REE proves it is the school with a heart of gold as the stage was overflowing with gifts, supplies, and donations. Dr. Danni Hoey from Indian River State College addressed students at Samuel Gaines Academy during the December Speakers Bureau presentation. The Speakers Bureau is a valuable channel of communication between students and community leaders.

An entourage of St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) administrators surprised the three finalists for School Related Employee of the Year on Tuesday. Cheers and sounds of glee filled the classrooms, offices, and hallways as Delores “Annie” Jones (Lakewood Park Elementary), Emily Siangco (Student Services Department), and Charles Pilson (Manatee Academy) were made aware of this recognition. Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition would like to thank all those who donated to our Toys for Tots Drive. We were proud to present over 250 gifts to Sgt. SLWK-8 kindergarten teachers declared that December 11th would be Grinch Day. The students embraced this concept and went all out! Happy Grinch Day!
The SLWK-8 elementary gifted S.A.G.E. classes participated again this year in a holiday community service project. The students decorated holiday bags for the “Meals on Wheels” program in our area. This program provides and delivers meals to senior citizens who are homebound. These students have volunteered their time to show their holiday spirit and citizenship during the holidays!
Gold and Silver Volunteer School Awards were presented to schools by Martha Underwood, volunteer coordinator. These awards recognize exemplary programs that support community and parent involvement.
St. Lucie County’s Education Foundation awarded 33 grants to teachers throughout the district. Executive Director Thom Jones indicated that the grants represent a $50,000.00 investment in quality educational programs to benefit student achievement.
The SLWK-8 Jr. Thespian Troupe wowed the audience at their 4th annual Thespian Showcase performance on November 19th. In addition, they performed at the District 3 Junior Thespian Festival on December 5th and brought home 11 scores of EXCELLENT and 6 scores of SUPERIOR. Great job, Ms. Tsunoda and our talented thespians!

School Board Members share their thoughts on the accomplishments of St. Lucie Public Schools including the selection of a new superintendent, the Speakers Bureau, the arts in education, @ccess Now, and the celebrations of students and staff.
In a surprise announcement today, Aneesa Dial of Fort Pierce Westwood High School’s Marine and Oceanographic Academy (MOA), learned that she is one of 14 finalists for the Take Stock in Children’s Leaders 4 Life (L4L) Fellowship Program. This is a prestigious statewide fellowship which is designed to provide highly motivated Take Stock in Children scholars who have demonstrated strong leadership skills, moral character, and academic success with the financial resources, services, and support needed to ensure student success throughout college. Six students will become “fellows” as winners of the L4L Fellowship. Fellows will be announced in January 2016. Congratulations, Aneesa!!!

Rivers Edge’s amazing PTO hosted the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon for the staff. They spoiled the staff with a catered lunch from St. Lucie Draft House and decorated the staff lounge in a family style Thanksgiving decor. The staff loved being able to sit around a large table and kick off the week before Thanksgiving with a relaxing and scrumptious lunch.
Casie Schulz and Bailey Layle, two 8th grade SLWK-8 Shark chefs, are preparing Red Velvet Roulades for the District Culinary Showcase to be held at the St. Lucie County Civic Center on Wednesday December 9th from 5 to 7 PM. Their teacher is Ms. Jennifer Tremblay.
Social studies and ELA educators from St. Lucie participated in the Echoes and Reflections Holocaust training. The training was provided by the Holocaust Task Force organized by Linda Medvin, Director of the FAU Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education. The engaging presentation was lead by Stephanie McMahon Kaye from Yad Vashem. “I found this training to be an eye opening and engaging experience.
