St. Lucie Public Schools Student Services, Exceptional Student Education, and FDLRS Division recently completed a two-month campaign to support Grace Packs. With a focus of bringing in food items each Friday during the months of November and December, the Division managed to fill numerous Grace Packs boxes with food item donations that help support families in need each week. This team’s benevolent spirit supports other causes as well. Physicians Immediate Care conducted a promotion during the summer months in which they pledged to donate $5 per sports physical conducted at their medical facilities. They raised $555 which the Education Foundation will apply towards the 2017 Teacher Matching Grant Program. Foundation President Thom Jones, Superintendent E. Wayne Gent, and School Board Members accepted the generous donation from Dr. Ken Palestrant, CEO of Physicians Immediate Care and Jeannie Jacobson, Director of Marketing, at a recent Board meeting.
Weatherbee hosted an episodic reading event on the last day before winter break. Members from the community, including SLPS District Office employees, St. Lucie County School Board Members, business leaders, St. Lucie County Commissioners, and law enforcement professionals came to Weatherbee to share their love of reading with our Mariners. Each guest reader visited three classrooms, read a book aloud, and shared how literacy has positively impacted their lives.

Fort Pierce Central’s Culinary Arts students attended the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Show held on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, in Orlando, FL. All five culinary programs from the District attended the show. Students learned about new trends in food service and had the opportunity to taste foods from around the world. Students also enjoyed networking with industry leaders within the Culinary and Hospitality industries. The culinary students will embrace these experiences for a lifetime. Donuts for Dads was a great success at Morningside Elementary. Dads, grandads, uncles, and some moms brought their students to school from 8:15-8:45 am. They enjoyed doughnuts and coffee with their students in the cafeteria and in classrooms across the campus. .
SLW Centennial High School and Treasure Coast High School English and reading teachers teamed up for an Advanced Thinking Maps training focused on evidence-based writing. Teachers utilized scaffolded, structured maps to guide the argumentative writing process. The teachers and administrators present were inspired and well prepared to, in turn, inspire and prepare our SLPS students! It was an effective and instrumental talent development day!
