CAST Teacher Among Elite Group to Attend Geosciences Camp

FORT PIERCE, FL – Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie’s (CAST) eighth grade science teacher, Aaron Barnes, was selected to represent CAST at Texas A & M University’s G-Camp through their College of Geosciences. The acceptance into this program is an extreme honor as only 50 teachers in the United States are chosen for this opportunity.

G-Camp is a 20-day field camp for teachers that provides first-hand experience with the principles of geology in the field. It helps develop new curriculum and virtual field trips for classrooms and makes learning outdoors fun and exciting. This field experience puts participants on an outcrop, on the slope of a volcano, on the footwall of a fault, in a spectacular glacial valley, at the toe of a landslide, and in a pristine flowing stream – to mention just a few. The itinerary takes teachers through various states including Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado.

Mr. Barnes will receive an introduction to the principles of geology, as well as the opportunity to develop and share curriculum materials in order to teach the standards required for grades 5-12. Throughout the trip, he will explore geologic landscapes, volcanic features, ancient marine deposits, sand dunes, faults, glacial landscapes, streams, landslides, energy resources, and mineral resources.

CAST Principal Lori Reid said, “This is a tremendous professional growth opportunity for our entire school.  Mr. Barnes will reap professional rewards from his experiences and, in turn, our students and our staff will also benefit. When he returns, he will share valuable knowledge with our staff and incorporate the learning into his teaching practices.”
