Burkes’ Bravery

Cobra Nation and Big Apple Pizza’s Van Duzer Foundation

rallies with one our own!

On Wednesday, February 21, 2024, Big Apple Pizza hosted a fundraiser for Fort Pierce Central High School Chemistry teacher, Adora Burkes. Mrs. Burkes is diagnosed with stage four cancer. Although it is not curable, the chronic condition is considered treatable but is very expensive. For the foreseeable future, she is bravely facing rigorous radiation, chemo, and physical therapy treatments. Mrs. Heather Blackmon-Gordon along with former and current teachers at Fort Pierce Central High School worked with The Van Duzer Foundation to raise money towards Mrs. Burkes’ medical bills.

Big Apple Pizza donated one hundred percent of all sales, plus tips and staff salaries to the Burkes family. From take-out to dine-in, every bite of pizza enjoyed went towards Mrs. Burkes. Many former and current principals, assistant principals, current and former students, as well as local community members came out to support Mrs. Burkes wearing their specially designed “Team Burkes” t-shirts featuring her iconic red framed glasses.

The event saw no shortage of great food, good conversations, and enticing raffles! Raffle prizes were donated from the Thirsty Turtle, Chucks Seafood, Pickled, Tri-County Pet & Feed store, Nelson’s family farm, HEW fitness, Sailfish Brewery, 2nd Street Bistro, AMC, Casa Azteca, The Cake Lady, Kyle G’s, Beach Bowls, Chic & Shore, Notions & Potions, Varsity Sport Shop, Smokin Fish Charters, Dr. Beckett & Dr. Moholtz Skin & Vein Therapies, Nails & You, GQ Studios, and Motorized Kayak Adventures.
