Meet Flo! For the past 21 days, our Floresta Dolphins have participated in a school-wide embryology project sponsored by our local 4-H. Students explored the development of living things with this first-hand experience of incubating eggs and watching them hatch.
Students In Mrs. Madorma’s class engaged in exploratory science inquiry activities to explore the distance of stars. Students used flashlights, grid paper, and meter sticks to simulate the brightness of stars at different distances. Students discovered the answers to such questions as: How does the distance of a star affect how bright it looks? How do you think the distance of a star will change its brightness? What causes some stars to be brighter than others?
At Floresta Elementary, mentees have been planted close to their Marigold! They found their positive, encouraging, nurturing, and supportive mentor that will continue to help them grow not only this year but, in the years to follow.
5th grade students in Mrs. Currie’s Art class at Floresta Elementary learned about the Mexican tradition of making and decorating with Papel Picado.
Ms. Debbie from 4-H visited the first grade with her new service puppy Buddy. Students learned how to care for a pet, the basic needs of pets, and how to approach a strange pet. Students enjoyed getting to pet and interact with Buddy.
Congratulations to SLPS’ first cohort of Take 5! Trainers. Twenty sites across the district will be able to offer the Take 5! training to their teachers and staff. Take 5! focuses on competency building for long term personal and professional impact by providing a safe space for adults to connect with one another, identify their own personal needs, and develop the skills and mindset to foster their personal growth. The SEL Department’s presentation at the Excelerator Virtual Conference sponsored by the national organization, Alliance for Strong Families and Communities was well received. Traci Wilke, Director of SEL and the district’s SEL Specialists’ Cassey Chang and Christina Coppola shared St. Lucie Public Schools’ journey in Building Capacity for SEL Across a Large District. Kelly Martin, the Alliance’s Director of Impact for Educational Success shared, “Your presentation was one of the most engaging and enthusiastic sessions of the entire conference, and we are so grateful for the time and expertise you shared with the Alliance network.”
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and academic success were the focus of this virtual Night of Freshmen Learning (NFL) for all 9th grade Westwood Panthers and their families. Christina Coppola, a district SEL Specialist, psyched up the audience with a fun welcoming ritual to create a sense of community for the evening. The district SEL Parent Educator, Blondeen Newman, discussed her role and offered resources of everyday tips to being a successful high school student. The St. Lucie Public Defense Office is sponsoring a tie drive to support SGA’s Leadership Days. All middle school students participate in a Successful Scholar elective focusing on goal setting, organizational, study and communication skills needed for success in college and careers. Each Thursday, students are encouraged to wear “Professional Dress”. Seventy ties have been donated for our young men to wear. Gaines Academy was recognized by the American Reading Company for their 100 Book Challenge Reading program. Students reading levels increased on average 1.47 years during the 2014-15 school year. Believe in GAINS at Gaines!
When the 2014-2015 school year started Mrs. Wilke presented the students with a challenge. She challenged them to read 1,000,000 steps of reading practice for 100 Book Challenge. Mrs. Wilke told the students if they met the principal’s challenge she would do anything they wanted her to do. The students voted on several options such as sing karaoke, dress like a clown, and complete the Ice Bucket Challenge.
