Academic Team Will Represent SLPS at State Competition

Students from across the District make up the SLPS Academic Team that will be going to the state level competition in April. St. Lucie Soars represents the county’s longstanding focus on early literacy through collaborative partnerships with St. Lucie Public Schools, Early Learning Coalition, ALPI, the Education Foundation, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

The only thing missing was the red carpet as a parade of well-wishers honored the three finalists for St. Lucie Public Schools’ (SLPS) Teacher of the Year. On Monday, Sandra Oliveira (St. Lucie West Centennial High School), Heather Knab (Floresta Elementary), and Jeffrey L. Johnson, Sr. (Dale Cassens Education Complex) were surprised with the news, flowers, and balloons by a team from St. Lucie’s Education Foundation and School Board. Project Citizen – Civics Education is Applied by 7th Graders

This year’s Project Citizen Showcase took place at IRSC’s Kight Center.  Teams of 7th graders from across the District came together to discuss their civic-minded projects with judges and vie for an opportunity to move on to the state-level competition. About Project Citizen: Project Citizen is a curricular program for middle, secondary, and post-secondary students, youth organizations, and adult groups that promotes competent and responsible participation in local and state government. Norton and Chaney Inspire SLWCHS Eagles

Chris Norton, motivational speaker, delivered an enlightening and powerful message to the athletes of St. Lucie West Centennial High School on Saturday evening. In addition, Centennial’s own former Mississippi State standout and NFL linebacker, Jamar Chaney, spoke with the athletes. Jamar shared a message of resilience and of how his efforts, attitude, and faith paved the way for his success. This was a free event and also served as a second semester kick-off for Project EAGLE and F.C.A.

4th Annual Early Childhood Learning Conference

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – Voluntary pre-kindergarten (VPK) and kindergarten educators from across the District will convene on Fort Pierce Central High School’s campus for the Kaleidoscope of Movement Conference on Saturday, January 30, 2016. A wide array of talent development sessions will target early learning needs for four to six-year-old children with special sessions designed to support important learning opportunities for infants and toddlers. This year’s District nominee for STEM Sunshine State Scholar is Bailey Magers from Treasure Coast High School. Bailey, along with his parents and a teacher, who has served as a significant influence to him, will travel to Orlando May 19 – 20, 2016, for an extraordinary two-day program.  In addition to bringing together the scholars to be honored, the foundation invites representatives from Florida’s colleges and universities to meet with the students and discuss career and post-secondary opportunities available to them in Florida. TCHS Band Director Receives Award

TCHS is proud to announce that Mr. Luke Hall is a recipient of the Tom Bishop award for 2016. This is a very prestigious award given by the Florida Band Association to select band directors in the state. The criteria includes significant improvement in MPA scores and an increase in overall band membership numbers during their tenure.

St. Lucie Elementary VPK Students Celebrate Their First Harvest

Through the creation of a class garden, Ms. White, Mrs. Hines, and the classroom volunteer Mrs. Snyder, led their VPK students through a multi-sensory learning experience with outcomes that connected both school and home environments. By utilizing the senses of touching, smelling, hearing, tasting, and seeing as well as drawing on background knowledge, the students were fully engaged in all steps of the planting and growing process. As a result, all of the students reaped an abundant harvest of green beans that they were able to take home and share with their families.

Poetry Slam Auditions at FPW

Friday, January 8, 2016, FPW hosted its first Poetry Slam. This slam was an audition for the Louder Than A Bomb Poetry Slam Competition that will be held in April 2016 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The judges selected 10 students to compete. They will meet once a week after school to learn how to write and perform their poetry.

Graduation Rates Continue to Climb in SLPS

Graduation rates continue to climb in St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) with a reported 75.5 percent rate for the 2014-2015 academic year. According to the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE), SLPS realized a 2.3 percent increase from last year’s rate of 73.2 percent and an increase over the last six years of more than 10 percent.
