Kindergarten students at F.K.Sweet are winding down the school year by taking advantage of every minute of instructional time left.  The students recognized common types of texts while comparing and contrasting versions of their favorite Fairy Tales.  Nancy Thomas from Mrs. Morgan Haupt’s class and Denzel Wright from Mrs. Melanie Francisco’s class were just two of most students who dressed up like their favorite Fairy Tale characters.  All of the kindergarten students are looking forward to “Happily Ever After” in first grade next year.

Shemar Sterlin and Nathan Gould (left to right), fourth graders at Frances K. Sweet, are the school’s top participants in the Scholastic Reading Counts Program. They each have over 1,000 reading counts points!

Frances K. Sweet fourth graders learn about the characteristics of flowering plants by dissecting them and classifying the parts.  Pictured here is Ansel Espinal viewing the tiny parts of the plant using a magnifying glass.

Frances K. Sweet  students in Kathy Offerdahl’s kindergarten class planted sunflower seeds and are keeping a journal to record the growth of their plant and all of the things that they are learning about them.  Pictured from the left, Holly Howard, Azarriea Desir, Ryan Johnson, and Noelle Edmond are waiting anxiously for their plants to sprout.

Students in Barbara Bennett’s third grade class at Frances K Sweet had wonderful time learning while gardening. The students came to school on Saturday to gain some extra knowledge about plants, in preparation for their upcoming curriculum about plants and animals. Not only did the students come, but their parents also came and participated in this exciting learning experience. The students had an awesome time gardening and sharing their experiences with each other.

Students in Kasey Ascani’s second grade class at Frances K. Sweet Magnet School were able to explore deeper into story structure during a recent field trip to LEGOLAND. Jordin Harper(left) and Madeline Chiong(right) crafted one part of a plot structure which they developed with their small group’s team members.

Dr. Kevin Perry and Mrs. Genelle Yost spent time observing Mrs. Lisa McGuire’s third grade class playing chess.  The chess program called “First Move” was implemented this school year for all Second and Third grade classes at Frances K. Sweet Magnet School.  The children are learning how to use and deepen their critical thinking skills through this program. Frances K Sweet celebrated Literacy Week by inviting dads in to read to classes.  The students in Melanie Francisco’s kindergarten class enjoyed being read to by Reverend Ham.  His son, Thomas, was beyond thrilled  to have his dad read one of his favorite books to his class. 

Cora Stickney Harper Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution was proud to announce the winners of the DAR American History Essay Contest. The contest was open to all public and private schools 5-8th grade.  Frances K Sweet Magnet School was proud that all three place holders for fifth grade were from our school. The title for this year’s contest was:  “A Child’s Journey Through Ellis Island”. First Place  Adriana Varn, Second Place Brooke Adams, and Third Place Mackenzie Kenney. F K Sweet kindergarteners would like to invite YOU to their circus. You can watch the fearless Lion Tamer and the daredevils on the high-wire! Laugh at the whimsical clowns and be amazed at the acrobats. All preformed by our talented and amazing kindergarten students. It is free to all! It’s fantastic, fun, and FREE. Students at Frances K Sweet Magnet School donated items to help make Christmas more enjoyable in Haiti. Children in Haiti will be pleased to receive the gift boxes filled with toys and school supplies. We were able to contribute 15 filled gift boxes. Kindergarten students at F.K.Sweet Magnet School invited their families to school for a Thanksgiving breakfast.  The students sang songs, brought in food to share, and dressed up like Pilgrims and Native Americans. Charlotte Sellers from Morgan Haupt’s class was joined by her parents, grandparents and sisters for the special event.

Students in Mrs. Julia Melville’s second grade class have been studying the human body. As a culminating activity to this unit, students created a model of the human skeleton, identifying the bones and their basic functions in relation to the human body. Mrs. Alice Parks’ first grade students had fun working in a Kagan Line Up activity.  The students unscrambled sentences and once the team came to a consensus they wrote their sentences in their word work journals. September in kindergarten has been such a busy month!  Did you know what you will find if you cut open an apple? Isaiah Brickles-Jackson was pleasantly surprised to find a star!  Students in Melanie Francisco’s class studied apples while learning the properties of matter.  After reading about Johnny Appleseed, students turned apples into applesauce.  They practiced patience while they worked in their classroom all day smelling the delicious aroma.  At the end of the day, they were able to taste it.  The applesauce was fabulous!

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Morgan Haupt’s class have had a busy week investigating spiders. Students learned the parts of a spider as well as their habitats.  For a culminating activity students made spider hats to wear home. The students in Mrs. Traci Lott’s second grade class had a great time reading literature and informational stories about spiders. Students were able to compare and contrast the most important ideas from the two texts on the same topic. The Kindergarten classes at Frances K. Sweet had a busy week studying Community Helpers.  Each day they had members of our community visit the school to share how they help us.  Officer Pratt from the Port St. Lucie Police Department shared his gear and discussed safety tips.  Melanie Francisco’s class especially liked the flashing lights and loud sirens from his awesome patrol car.
