SLWK-8 Student’s Artwork Selected for Exhibit

Tama Jeanchery’s artwork entitled “Rooted Heart” was recently entered in The Dali Museum’s 2016 Florida statewide Student Surrealist Art Exhibit: Between Dream and Reality. We are proud to announce that it was chosen to be exhibited at The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, FL this summer. Tama is an 8th grade student at SLWK-8. Her art teacher is Mrs. Jaime Mazzo. Great work, Tama!

Centennial Honors Retiring Athletic Director

St. Lucie West Centennial High School’s Baseball Program honored outgoing Athletic Director John Messina prior to their last scheduled regular season contest against Port St. Lucie High School. The longtime AD/coach threw out the first pitch to his former catcher, Johnnie Rhoden, who is now the Head Coach at PSLHS. Messina’s resume as a head coach includes over 400 victories, State Championships, multiple Major League players and countless collegiate scholarships at Monsignor Pace in Miami, Port St. Lucie High School, and Jensen Beach High School. SLWK-8 Students Learn About Pioneers

The SLWK-8 4th Grade students recently took a field trip to Ft. Christmas and Alligator World. The students learned about how pioneers lived in early Florida and were able to grind corn and churn butter. Then they traveled to Alligator World where they observed animals in their natural habitats and explored the tools used by native Americans and settlers to survive in Florida.

SLWK-8 Grinch Day

SLWK-8 kindergarten teachers declared that December 11th would be Grinch Day. The students embraced this concept and went all out! Happy Grinch Day!

SLWK-8 S.A.G.E. Students Show Their Holiday Spirit

The SLWK-8 elementary gifted S.A.G.E. classes participated again this year in a holiday community service project. The students decorated holiday bags for the “Meals on Wheels” program in our area. This program provides and delivers meals to senior citizens who are homebound. These students have volunteered their time to show their holiday spirit and citizenship during the holidays!

SLWK-8 Jr. Thespians Win at Festival

The SLWK-8 Jr. Thespian Troupe wowed the audience at their 4th annual Thespian Showcase performance on November 19th. In addition, they performed at the District 3 Junior Thespian Festival on December 5th and brought home 11 scores of EXCELLENT and 6 scores of SUPERIOR. Great job, Ms. Tsunoda and our talented thespians!

SLWK-8 1st Graders Learn a New Way to Write!

Students in Mrs. Cassie Migliore’s 1st Grade class are studying the literacy theme “Now and Long Ago.”  The students read about the homes and schools long ago and decided to see if they could write like they did back then. The students used feathers as quills to try to write their names. The students were also able to model and build Indian teepees from paper bags and decorate them with symbols they learned about.

SLWK-8 Shark Chefs Prepare for Competition

Casie Schulz and Bailey Layle, two 8th grade SLWK-8 Shark chefs, are preparing Red Velvet Roulades for the District Culinary Showcase to be held at the St. Lucie County Civic Center on Wednesday December 9th from 5 to 7 PM. Their teacher is Ms. Jennifer Tremblay.

Centennial Baseball Players Read to SLWK-8 1st Graders

St. Lucie West Centennial High School baseball players visited Mrs. Yancy’s first grade class at St. Lucie West K-8 School recently. The players introduced themselves to the students and read a book to them. Afterward, students asked questions about being a baseball player and what it was like over at the “big school” (SLWCHS). The players seemed to enjoy themselves and our first graders were ecstatic to meet the “big boys”! The baseball players will be returning next month for an interview session, where the first graders will interview the players.

SLWK-8 Breakfast with the Mayor

On May 18, Mayor Gregory Oravec spent the morning enjoying breakfast and answering candid questions from Student Council Members. Mayor Oravec was gracious enough to spend much of the morning visiting with many of the students, and was presented with an honorary key to the school to commemorate his visit.

SLWK-8 hosts Summer School

Ms. Serrano’s ESY PK-1 Hearing Impaired class participated in an interactive review of their camping vocabulary words. This activity required students to identify items they would need on a camping trip. Once identified, students located camping items that were strategically placed in the classroom and packed it in the class duffel bag.

SLC Teachers Participate in Supreme Court Justice Institute

Stephanie Isaacs, 7th Grade Civics Teacher at St. Lucie West K-8 School, and Anne Powell, 7th Grade Civics Teacher at Forest Grove Middle School, were two of 25 teachers selected from throughout Florida to attend the Supreme Court of Florida’s Justice Teaching Institute March 22-26 to learn about the state courts using a case study method. Teacher participants explored the courts and the Constitution in a four-and-a-half-day program with all seven justices serving as faculty. SLWK-8 Gifted Students Serve the Community

Our S.A.G.E. Academy at SLWK-8 (1st through 8th grade advanced/gifted students) participated in a community project to help senior citizens have a brighter holiday season. The students had to create holiday images onto 250 bags which would later be filled with items for 250 senior citizens who receive services from the Meals on Wheels program throughout the Treasure Coast. These holiday-filled bags bring joy to those senior citizens receiving them along with an appreciation that they are important and thought of by others in the community. SLWK-8 2nd Graders – Sink the Boat

Mrs. Alicia Miller’s 2nd Grade class performed a lab called “Sink the Boat”. Students experimented with clay to find a shape that floats. Then they estimated how many pennies it would take to sink a boat. Next, students added pennies one by one until their boats sank. Once it sank, they recorded the data. They repeated the experiment using paper clips. Ms. Diane Hanfmann also assisted the students with this lab.

St. Lucie West K8 teacher surprised with honor

St. Lucie West K8 fourth grade teacher Shannon Tango was surprised recently when representatives of an area radio station visited her class as part of the station’s monthly teacher recognition program. Tango was nominated by a parent of one of her students, who credited Tango with inspiring her students to achieve in the classroom, and for making learning fun! St. Lucie West K8 students learn about cell structure in biology

Students in Lindsey Laury’s seventh grade science classes at St. Lucie West K8 School are kicking off the year’s fourth quarter learning about DNA and RNA, and how proteins play an important part in DNA development. Students created edible DNA models using Twizzlers and marshmallows to emphasize the physical components of such an important biological structure. Port St. Lucie’s mayor answers students’ questions in visit

Students in Lori Kennedy’s fifth grade enrichment class at St. Lucie West K8 School recently wrote letters to city officials regarding concerns they had about issues in the area. After Port St. Lucie Mayor JoAnn Faiella received hers, she accepted the invitation to visit, saying she would like to address their concerns personally. St. Lucie West K8 School kindergartners recently enjoyed visiting the Florida Oceanographic Center. Students enjoyed opportunites to learn about local ocean life, such as petting stingrays.
