Mariposa Elementary students learning to write narrative stories

Mariposa Elementary School’s third graders in Monica Almeida’s class are enjoying their first attempts at writing narrative stories. The students are using SMILE’s Quick beginning, Loooong, interesting middle, and Feelings at the end format to create their original stories. The students hope to share their stories with Mariposa’s kindergarten students soon!

Arbor Day at Mariposa Elementary provides trees for students

In celebration of Arbor Day, Mariposa Elementary School fourth graders were foresters for a day. The students were able to plant the state tree, Sabal Palm,  around the school grounds in hopes to bring awareness of the importance of plants and trees in our environment.  At the end of the day, each student was able to take home a Sabal Palm of their very own to plant in their yards.

Students learn to use PowerPoint at Mariposa Elementary media center

Students visiting the media center at Mariposa Elementary School are learning how to use Powerpoint to help present their research projects.  Students are taught by media specialist Charlotte Pennington on how to create powerful slide presentations by using photos, clipart, music, audio recordings, text, and animation to help make their research project come alive.  Many of the projects created in the media center will be used in the morning news show, WingsTV, for all to view.   

Parents flock to multi-cultural feast at Mariposa Elementary

Second graders in Lisa Green’s class at Mariposa Elementary School invited parents and family members in for an annual Multi-Cultural Feast.  After students presented a reader’s theatre, recipes from across the globe were shared by all.  It provided the unique experience of trying foods from other cultures without actually going anywhere!  It was fantastic to see that so many parents were able to attend or send in authentic cuisine from their culture!Pictured, are Carmen Mendoza (William’s mother), William Biffle, and Ashley Mendez-Hernandez.  

Mariposa Elementary students roll the dice to learn math

Mariposa Elementary School first grade students in Laura Lenihan’s class solved different ways to add numbers 2-12 during their math activity. Students worked in partnerships to play the game “Roll the Dice”. Pictured, from left, are students  Ana Arcenteles and Jesse Balderas working together.  

Science investigation alive at Mariposa Elementary

Hobe Sound Nature Center came to Mariposa Elementary to educate Mariposa Elementary School students about owls and hawks.  Students became scientists for a day while investigating owl pellets, which are digested food from the owls.  Students were engrossed in this fun and educational activity. 

Mariposa Elementary students study original colonies

Fifth grade Mariposa students in Zoie Sloan’s Social Studies class are studying the 13 original colonies of the United States. The students have created a flipbook of information about all 13 colonies, create a map, and then complete a project on one specific colony. They will present an oral presentation including a visual representation of the information when the final project is completed. Read to Succeed event held at Mariposa Elementary

Mariposa Elementary School recently held its second Read to Succeed night. Assistant Principal Sandra Bushby, pictured, presented reading strategies and tips for parents to use with their children at home. Afterwards, everyone played Word Bingo, and all students went home with a new book to read! Assistan Principal, Sandra Bushby, presenting some reading strategies to parents.

Rotary Club members visits Mariposa Elementary

Mariposa Elementary School third grade students recently received an early present! The Sunset Rotary Club of Port St. Lucie visited the school and distributed dictionaries to over 120 students, and shared some songs and dictionary games with the students.  Pictured are Rotarians Lenny and Vickie Lloyd entertaining the students.  

Mariposa Elementary first grade students tour a fire station

  Mariposa Elementary School first grade students went on a field trip to Fire Rescue Station 13 for a fire safety presentation.  The students learned important lifesaving tips and fun facts about firefighters.  After the presentation the students got an inside look at a fire engine, toured the firefighters’ living quarters, and even got to try on a firefighter’s jacket.   

Mariposa Elementary School students write books about favorite foods

After reading the book Pickle Things by Marc Brown, students in Theresa Delancy’s third grade class at Mariposa Elementary made their own book projects based on food.  Some of the titles included Cupcake Things, Squid Things, and Cheese Ball Things.  To culminate, the students were able to bring in the food that went with their book and read to special guests.  Pictured is George Sofikitis reading his book Lollipop Things to math coach Terri MacInnes.  What a delicious project!
