It took over 30 rounds to declare the 2012 spelling bee winners at F.K. Sweet Elementary. The best of the spellers from each fourth and fifth grade class recently took stage to spell some very difficult words. In the end, pictured from left, Rida Ahmed emerged as the winner, followed by second place speller Cassie Ackenbrack, and Ariel Neptune took third place. Congratulations on a job well done.
Students in St. Lucie County schools have been learning about bullying in their classrooms. At FK Sweet Elementary, Joe the Biker talked with students at a recent assembly on how to recognize bullying and strategies for dealing with this type of behavior. The children listened intently as Joe talked about his elementary experiences of being bullied. Pictured, DeEra Nelson and Elijah Major both feel better equiped to handle any bullying incidents that might arise in the future.
Remember, Celebrate, and Take Action was the theme of the recent Martin Luther King parade. Second place winner in the elementary division from F.K. Sweet Elementary captured all three aspects perfectly with remembering Dr. King’s speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial, while children celebrate by joining hands and uniting in order to take action. Pictured, art teacher Carey Schott and her committee worked tirelessly to create this year’s beautiful float.
Students in Nardi Routten’s fourth grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary recently wrote a children’s book as part of their Disney Planet Challenge. This book is about two sea turtles — Bianca and Timmy — and their journey to their ocean home. They face many dangers as they strive to reach the ocean waters. Published via DiggyPod, students are selling these books for $6.00 each. Proceeds from the sale of these books will be donated to the Mosquito Control and Marine and Coastal Management Services to help fund their projects with sea turtles. Robbie Baumgarten, a second grade student in Rachel Lutha’s class at F.K. Sweet Elementary is using a part of his Daily Five Reading time to reflect and write about what he has just read. Students are afforded choices within the literacy routine on a daily basis.
Students at F.K. Sweet Elementary recently enjoyed an after school dance sponsored by the PBS Team. The proceeds from the dance will be used to purchase award items for each classroom teacher. This conga line is enjoying one of many different kinds of dances.
The recent Scholastic Book Fair at F.K. Sweet Elementary was a huge success. Students were able to browse before making their final selections of favorite reads. Pictured getting ready to shop are students Alexicia Barron and Derek Paredes.
Fourth grade students at F.K. Sweet Elementary in Amiee Cripps’ class are currently focusing on Florida history and are proud of their Florida Native American projects. Each student created a diorama focusing on an aspect of their life and culture.
Students at F.K. Sweet Elementary that have read a total of 10 Florida Sunshine Books were recently treated to an ice cream sundae party by Jeannie DuPell, media specialist. The goal is to read all 15 books by the end of spring.
Honor Roll Assemblies were held prior to winter break, and seen celebrating Principal’s Honor Roll is F.K. Sweet Elementary third grade student, Justin Adrian, and his father Todd Adrian, a teacher at Fairlawn Elementary School. Students making Principal’s Honor Roll must obtain A’s in all subjects, including art, music, physical education, and conduct.
ESOL paraprofessional at F.K. Sweet Elementary, David Morales, visits various classrooms throughout the day to assist students. His services are avilable to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. He helps to translate for parents during conferences and other school meetings. Camerino Diaz, pictured, has been working with him for several years.
The beautiful voices of the F.K.Sweet Elementary School’s choral group Sweet Sounds rang loud clear during the recent Winter Holiday Concert. Pictured with the music teacher Jan Christensen are fourth and fifth graders that practice twice weekly for concerts and other vocal events.
Students in Donna Hellums’ first grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary celebrated the winter holidays with a pajama party and a viewing of the Polar Express. They compared and contrasted the book and the movie.
Fifth graders at Frances K. Sweet Elementary School got an in depth look inside the ear. Students enjoyed a lesson presented by Joe Mutter from Mutter’s Hearing Center on the anatomy of the ear and the benefits of taking steps now to prevent hearing loss later in life. In this picture, Mr. Mutter is showing students Allaysia Miller’s auditory canal and eardrum. Students also took hearing tests and experienced what life would be like with moderate hearing loss.
The Student Council officers and classroom representatives were all on hand to assist with students having their pictures taken with Santa at the recent Saturday morning breakfast at F.K. Sweet Elementary. The breakfast was organized by sponsor Michelle Adrian, and enjoyed by many families.
Jar’Breanna Frierson and Samuel Villalobos from Dorian Newbern’s first grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary are busy creating their own gingerbread houses. Students were allowed to express their creativity and decorate the outside to suit their own tastes.
Students in Jody Horton’s fourth grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary School have been learning about the native tribes of Florida. Students created dioramas on either the Calusa, Apalachee, Timucua, Tequesta, or Tocobaga tribes. They also wrote summaries about the tribe that included where they lived and their customs. Fifth grade students in Donald Logue’s science class at F. K. Sweet Elementary School, pictured from left Ethan Yarberry, Taylor Roop, and Ciara Ackenbrack, can explain all about the various body systems, such as digestive, skeletal, resipiratory, and circulatory. Each student created a poster with original drawings and explained the work of that system on index cards.
Fifth grade student China Whitehead from Christy Nuccio’s class at F.K. Sweet Elementary School recently won second prize for her essay on the Statue of Liberty. The local VFW sponsored the contest open to all fifth grade students in St. Lucie County.
Students Everett Braynen, Isabelle Storck, and Rita Ahmed from Jodie Steele’s fifth grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary School are pointing out their completed poster projects on the Everglades. Students researched information of the past and present conditions of the Everglades, and offered suggestions that might lead to restoration in the future.
