Southport Middle School Students Receive a Healthy Treat and Nutritious Lesson

Southport’s cafeteria staff delivered a healthy treat to Mrs. Sharon Dudash’s students along with a nutritious lesson on how plants grow. After finishing up a project on seeds in their class, Cafeteria Manager Eileen Kielbasa presented a lesson on how plants grow using Florida grown vegetables from the Farm to School initiative. The students got to see the seeds inside the vegetables, and enjoyed a healthy snack later in the afternoon. According to the project’s website, “Florida’s Farm to School initiative allows students to gain access to healthy, local foods as well as education opportunities such as school gardens, cooking lessons and farm field trips. Farm to School empowers children and their families to make informed food choices while enhancing the connection that communities have with local grower.”  The initiative aims to increase children’s consumption of nutritious foods in their diets and inform how healthy food plays a vital role in their present and future health.
