Southport Middle School STEM students recently took on the role of engineers as they explored the principles of structural engineering through a hands-on bridge design challenge. Students investigated how forces affect structures and learned what makes a design both strong and stable. During the activity, classes were tasked with solving a real-world problem: constructing a bridge capable of spanning a nine-inch gap between two tables while supporting increasingly heavy weights.
Students experimented with a variety of materials and design techniques to determine which shapes and structures provide the greatest strength. In one class, students discovered how even a material often considered weak, such as paper, can become surprisingly strong when folded and shaped strategically. Throughout the challenge, students analyzed the relationship between strength, stability, and efficiency as they worked to create bridges that were not only durable but also lightweight. The engaging lesson encouraged critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation while giving students an authentic look at how engineers design structures that withstand real-world forces and demands. The activity demonstrated that successful engineering is not simply about using more materials, but about designing smarter, more effective solutions.
