Southport Middle School Students Become Scientists with Invisible Ink Investigation

Southport Middle School sixth-grade students recently stepped into the role of scientists while exploring the scientific method through an engaging hands-on laboratory investigation using invisible ink. As part of their learning, students researched how invisible ink was used during the Revolutionary War to secretly communicate with allied forces, helping share important information without detection. Students conducted an experiment to determine which type of juice would create the most effective invisible ink. Using three juices with different acidity levels, students carefully identified a single independent variable and observed the results using qualitative data. They then analyzed their findings, tested their hypotheses, and drew evidence-based conclusions. This exciting lesson combined history and science while providing students with authentic opportunities to apply critical thinking, experimental design, data collection, and problem-solving skills. By connecting real-world historical events to scientific inquiry, students gained a deeper understanding of how scientists use observations and evidence to answer questions and make informed conclusions.
