VGESS Literacy Night at Morningside Library

Literacy Night for Village Green Elementary, hosted at the Morningside Branch Public Library, emerged as a remarkable event that fostered significant community partnerships. This initiative provided an excellent opportunity for parents and students to engage with the library’s offerings, including the process of signing up for library cards and discovering the plethora of free resources available for children. The evening commenced with students creating personalized bookmarks while their parents were introduced to an array of resources, such as ebooks and audiobooks accessible through platforms like Tumblebooks, Libby, Cloudlibrary, and Hoopla. Following the bookmark-making activity, students were captivated by a story presented via Tumblebooks, showcasing the engaging nature of digital storytelling. Lisa Lima, a children’s specialist from the public library, further enriched the experience by leading both students and parents on a guided tour of the library, illuminating the various sections and resources available. The night’s activities culminated in a cozy story time session, where students gathered on the story time carpet to listen to a tale read aloud, reinforcing the communal aspect of literacy and learning. Additionally, a representative from New World Reading was on hand to assist eligible students in signing up for a program that delivers nine free books directly to their homes, thereby promoting continued interest in reading beyond the confines of the library. Overall, Literacy Night provided a fruitful opportunity for students and their parents within the St. Lucie Public School community to explore and utilize the reading resources available to them, ultimately reinforcing the vital role that public libraries play in fostering literacy and lifelong learning.
