Eighth graders in Mr. Nicks’ science class at Samuel Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies (SGAET) identify unknown compounds by testing their chemical properties. pH indicator (Anthocyanin) was made by boiling red cabbage and collecting the purple solution that was produced. This indicator changes color based on the acidity or alkalinity of the substance it is added to. Students made observations on the color change in their lab reports and attempted to identify the unknown substances based on the known pH of common household solutions. The students were able to practice safe lab procedures and policies while strengthening their understanding of how to classify matter.
