A contingency of St. Lucie County School Board members, Superintendent Michael Lannon, district administrators and executives of the St. Lucie County Education Foundation surprised three finalists today for the school district’s 2012 School Related Employee of the Year honor on Thursday, January 5. The finalists were selected from nominees of support personnel from departments and schools representing such school operations as finance, food services, maintenance, transportation, clerical and office support, student assignment and instructional technology. Valerie Doyle’s fifth grade class at Floresta Elementary School recently was visited by Tim Polzin, a personal friend of Ms. Doyle’s who lives in Saint Lucie County. Tim is a famous bass guitarist who currently fills in when needed for various performing bands. During his career as a musician, he has traveled all over the world and has played with many top rock and country bands. He brought two of his favorite guitars, which were custom made for him by Stuart Spector . Each guitar was valued at over $10,000. As Allapattah Flats middle school students wrapped up science fair, sixth grade moved into learning about magnetic forces. The class has been using electric charges and magnetic charges within a lab setting for hands on learning. Eighth grade has just finished studying various kinds of mixtures as well as matter and the energy cycle. Third grade classes at Allapattah Flats are excited about Positive Behavior Support! The students that have earned 10 Gator Bucks are looking forward to a movie and popcorn party. Students are working hard to show their best behavior and earn Gator Bucks. They also try to be good role models for other students and work their way towards becoming “Gator of the Month”. St. Lucie West Centennial High School senior Nicole McHenry is one of only 16 student athletes chosen from over 700 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) member schools to serve on the FHSAA Student Advisory Committee. The purpose of the committee is to educate student athletes on FHSAA policies. Nicole was nominated by SLWCHS Athletic Director John Messina and has played volleyball and softball for all of her four years at Centennial.
Ron Parker, head football coach at St. Lucie West Centennial High School, was selected by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association to coach for the South team in Florida’s 2011 North/South All Star game in Sebring. Senior defensive back Ty Jackson, pictured with Parker, was also selected to participate in the game.
Fairlawn Elementary School recently celebrated the 11th Annual Inclusive Schools Week. Media Specialist Buster Nelson read a different book about children with disabilities to each grade level. Robbie Baumgarten, a second grade student in Rachel Lutha’s class at F.K. Sweet Elementary is using a part of his Daily Five Reading time to reflect and write about what he has just read. Students are afforded choices within the literacy routine on a daily basis.
Students at F.K. Sweet Elementary recently enjoyed an after school dance sponsored by the PBS Team. The proceeds from the dance will be used to purchase award items for each classroom teacher. This conga line is enjoying one of many different kinds of dances.

Fourth grade students at F.K. Sweet Elementary in Amiee Cripps’ class are currently focusing on Florida history and are proud of their Florida Native American projects. Each student created a diorama focusing on an aspect of their life and culture.
Students at F.K. Sweet Elementary that have read a total of 10 Florida Sunshine Books were recently treated to an ice cream sundae party by Jeannie DuPell, media specialist. The goal is to read all 15 books by the end of spring.
Honor Roll Assemblies were held prior to winter break, and seen celebrating Principal’s Honor Roll is F.K. Sweet Elementary third grade student, Justin Adrian, and his father Todd Adrian, a teacher at Fairlawn Elementary School. Students making Principal’s Honor Roll must obtain A’s in all subjects, including art, music, physical education, and conduct.
ESOL paraprofessional at F.K. Sweet Elementary, David Morales, visits various classrooms throughout the day to assist students. His services are avilable to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. He helps to translate for parents during conferences and other school meetings. The beautiful voices of the F.K.Sweet Elementary School’s choral group Sweet Sounds rang loud clear during the recent Winter Holiday Concert. Pictured with the music teacher Jan Christensen are fourth and fifth graders that practice twice weekly for concerts and other vocal events.
