St. Lucie County Schools celebrated ten years of growth, progress and acceptance with Autism Speaks on Monday afternoon when over 50 students with autism were treated to a fun filled day watching the New York Mets face the Miami Marlins. West Gate K8’s and Northport K8’s Autism Spectrum Disorder units traveled to Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie for lunch and an afternoon game with a major league team. “Despite the crowds and noise all the students had a wonderful time,” said Robert Cranmer, Principal of West Gate K8. “One student even caught a ball!”
Mr. Cranmer’s staff at West Gate K8 is very active in the autism community. They cosponsor the Walk Now for Autism Speaks on the Treasure Coast and now they initiated a county-wide field trip for all ASD students. “This was our first year planning this type of event. We hope all schools in St. Lucie County that have ASD units will see what a success this year’s game was and join us next year!” said Val Whyte, Behavior Tech and co-chair of the walk.
