St. Lucie Public Schools Criminal Justice senior completers were afforded the opportunity to be recognized by President Leslie Kristof of Keiser University, Judge Shaniek Mills-Maynard, Port St. Lucie Police Department’s Assistant Chief Richard DelToro, Fort Pierce Police Department Deputy Chief Kenny Norris, St. Lucie Public School’s Board Members (Dr. Mills, Mrs. Hawley, and Mr. Kelly), Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jon Prince, and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Helen Wild. St. Lucie West Centennial High Schools’ Law Academy Hosts St. Lucie Sheriff’s Drone Team

St. Lucie West Centennial High School students from Mrs. Angela Baumgarten and Mr. James Nichols’ Law Academy (Criminal Justice) participated in a live drone demonstration. Members from the St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office Drone team led this demonstration, along with an engaging conversation with students on the use of technology and legalities surrounding the use of unmanned aircraft in law enforcement.  Deputies David Leigh (School Resource, Explorers Advisor, Swim instructor, and Drone Pilot) and Trevor Boyce (Drone Pilot and Road Patrol) were the guest speakers and led the presentation. .

Circuit Judge, Prosecutor, and Public Defender Visit St. Lucie West Centennial High Schools’ Law Academy

St. Lucie West Centennial High Schools’ Law Academy (criminal justice program) welcomed Judge Rebecca White with Anastasia Norman (prosecutor) and Jennifer Nelson (public defender) from the Circuit Court. There was a panel discussion for each guest speaker to explain their roles in the pretrial process and the criminal justice system as a whole. This presentation was very engaging for students as speakers provided realistic case discussion, recommendations for future professionals, benefits and challenges of their career.  

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team Demonstration with Centennial’s Criminal Justice Students

Representatives from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone team hosted a live demonstration for Criminal Justice and Law Academy students from St. Lucie West Centennial High School.  Special thanks to SLPS Criminal Justice Advisory Board member, Sergeant Wes Harbrin from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office for setting up this event!  Mrs. Angela Baumgarten’s students were engaged and learned about skills, training, and career options for sUAS industry certification and the connection of drones to the field of law enforcement.  

Criminal Justice Students Connect to Emergency Operations Center

St. Lucie West Centennial High School’s Criminal Justice students from Mrs. Angela Baumgarten’s class participated in a guest speaker presentation with business partners from the Emergency Operation Center of St. Lucie County.  Guest speakers were Kathleen Hissong (Communications Manager) and Karen Kozac (Emergency Management Safety Planner).  The presentation was very well received by the students and included a conversation on qualities and characteristics needed to work, and details on employment opportunities within St. Lucie County.  This connection was made possible from the Criminal Justice Advisory Board and business partnerships with Doug Baber (Director, Human Resources and Risk Management) and Frank … Read More

Criminal Justice Student Interns with the City of Fort Pierce

St. Lucie West Centennial High’s Criminal Justice student, Taylor Cuevas, is an Intern with the City of Fort Pierce- Code Enforcement Unit.  This internship allows her to learn and apply her training as an Accredited Legal Professional.  She states that she is gaining new knowledge and appreciates the opportunity.  Taylor plans to attend the University of Central Florida to pursue Criminal Law after high school.  Thank you to Mr. James “Jim” Nichols for offering this opportunity to his students through the Criminal Justice 4 course.
