St. Lucie Mets baseball team pitchers Adam Kolareck and Chase Huchingson and team mascot Slider recently visited WestGate K8 to read to students in first and second grade classes.  The Mets program “Slide Into Reading” rewards students who read a required number of books by giving them two free passes to a summer ball game.  This year at WestGate students scored a grand slam home run!  WestGate is grateful to the Mets for their support of literacy in St. Lucie County.

Food and Nutrition Services school staff recently attended the Florida School Nutrition Association Conference to receive training in all areas of its Child Nutrition Program. Two St. Lucie Schools employees were recognized for their efforts in improving the nutrition environment at their schools.  Eileen Kielbasa, second from the right on the front row, kneeling, at Southport Middle and Carole Schutt at St Lucie West K-8, not pictured, received the School Nutrition Award for the middle and elementary school level, respectively.  

Fort Pierce Central students and teachers were joined by St. Lucie County firefighters to celebrate Autism Awareness in April! Mrs. Puentes’ class was met by our local heroes in the bus loop for an interactive tour of two well-equipped fire trucks. Firefighters arrived with their aerial truck and fire engine. Groups of students rotated to see, hear, and ask questions about the exterior and interior components of the aerial truck. Our firefighters graciously allowed students to participate in the fire hose demonstration and showed their longest ladder extension in the fleet. Students found the experience impressive and fun! Two experts from St. Lucie Public Schools recently presented at the FAEDS (Florida Association of Educational Data Systems) Conference. Julia Hilburn presented on Microsoft Bookings and Calendar-based logs.  The session was extremely successful. Microsoft was overly proud and shared the information with the SLPS District Representative. Other school districts from across Florida asked if Julia could partner with them to share ideas. This session received a 5-Star Rating! Sally Vandereedt presented on Power Automate and low code solutions. On Saturday March 12th, St. Lucie Elementary held its first beautification session, “Redress for School Progress” campaign. It was a success, not only because of the work done, but because of the combined efforts of the community to see this campaign through. Present were community leaders, caring parents, supportive students, and a believing administration and staff. St. Lucie County’s Commissioner, Kim Johnson, an advocate of this movement, has played an important role in the planning with administration. Through the creation of a class garden, Ms. White, Mrs. Hines, and the classroom volunteer Mrs. Snyder, led their VPK students through a multi-sensory learning experience with outcomes that connected both school and home environments. By utilizing the senses of touching, smelling, hearing, tasting, and seeing as well as drawing on background knowledge, the students were fully engaged in all steps of the planting and growing process. As a result, all of the students reaped an abundant harvest of green beans that they were able to take home and share with their families.    

St. Lucie Elementary kindergarten teacher, Talaya Reeves, was able to visit all of her students at home to give them much needed supplies. Mrs. Reeves applied for a grant from General Motors and Donors Choose – the Keep Kids Learning Program. She received a $1,000 gift card to Walmart and was able to gift each of her students with food, games, crafts, and other educational supplies. Way to go, Mrs. Reeves! Thanks for always loving your students!  

Kinde3rgartners at St. Lucie Elementary School recently wrote thank you notes and made paper doll soldiers for members of unit 1-44 AMD in Fort Hood, Texas.  Kindergarten teacher Suzanne Burke hand-delivered the notes personally to her daughter’s unit over Veteran’s Day weekend.

Students from Leigh Bretherick’s fifth grade class at St. Lucie Elementary School recognized Earth Day by making bird feeders using recycled milk cartons.  Displaying their creations, from left, are Maria Ramirez, Hakem Jean-Baptiste, Blanca Escobar, Cecilio Ramirez, and Salvador Leon.

The First Grade students at Saint Lucie Elementary and their teacher, Ms. Tasha Otto, were excited to show off their Action 100 Reading strategies at St. Lucie Elementary during a recent visit from Orange County Public School Leaders. Action 100 has students actively engaged in reading at their “Fun, Fast and Easy” independent reading level for 60 minutes per day at school with an additional home-to-school connection .

Students in Andrea Porte’s third grade class at St. Lucie Elementary had a good time reading their favorite books in their pajamas at the Positive Behavior Support Reading Camp-In.  Enjoying their books, from left, are Lizbet Venegas, Ryan Maldonado, Kendrick Bailey, Henry Jones, and Isabel Maldonado.

Fifth grade students at St. Lucie Elementary have been working on many science lab projects this year.  Warren Wiley, Pedro Escobedo, and Salvador Leon in Leigh Bretherick’s class are shown working on an assignment using tools that represent different bird beaks and the types of food they would be able to eat.

The student council of St. Lucie Elementary recently held a food drive to benefit the Harvest Food and Outreach Center.  Jakob Warren, Ramon Aguilar and Yasmin Enriquez from Holly Stephen’s first grade class proudly display canned goods their class collected.
