New Programs Bring First-Ever STEAM Learning Access to Three Magnet Schools
St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) is proud to announce the launch of new science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) and emerging technology programs and makerspaces using LEGO Education solutions, which include curriculum and professional development, in two of the district’s new magnet schools: Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie (CAST) and Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies (SGAET). The saying success breeds success holds true for Lydia Martin, principal of Southport Middle, and Debra Snyder, principal of Palm Pointe Research School, who are both recent graduates of the Florida Department of Education’s (FLDOE) Commissioner’s Leadership Academy. The principals were selected to participate in the Academy in recognition of their leadership skills and for being among Florida’s 50 highest performing principals. St. Lucie Mets baseball team pitchers Adam Kolareck and Chase Huchingson and team mascot Slider recently visited WestGate K8 to read to students in first and second grade classes. The Mets program “Slide Into Reading” rewards students who read a required number of books by giving them two free passes to a summer ball game. This year at WestGate students scored a grand slam home run! WestGate is grateful to the Mets for their support of literacy in St. Lucie County.

CTE Medical teachers and students from St. Lucie Public Schools participated in a virtual forum with Dr. Thomas Matese, Dr. Josephin Mathai, Dr. Ashkahn Zomorrodi, Dr. Nguyen, and Dr. McNamara from St. Lucie Medical Center. Over 200 SLPS Medical students learned about the process to become a Physician from the St. Lucie Medical Center’s Emergency Medicine Residency DEI group. This presentation also included Resident students currently in the Emergency Medicine program sharing their personal experiences and pathway to achieve their medical career goals.
St. Lucie Medical Center’s physicians and medical residents hosted a virtual DEI forum for St. Lucie Public School’s Health Science, Pharmacy Technician, and Veterinarian Assisting students. Students were engaged in a presentation and discussion on steps to take academically in accomplishing their goals to become a physician. Thank you to Dr. Tim McNamara, Dr. Kara Mann, Dr. Josephin Mathai, Dr. David Nguyen, and Dr. Thomas Matese for putting this session together for Career and Technical Education students and being a sustained business partner.
Physicians and Medical Residents from St. Lucie Medical Center hosted a virtual Diversity Equity and Inclusion forum for St. Lucie Public School (SLPS) Health Science students. Students heard directly from our local experts on what it takes to be a physician and the suggested steps current high school students may take to achieve their goals! Thank you to Dr. Thomas Matese, Dr. Josephin Mathai, Dr. David Nguyen, Dr. Tim McNamara, and Dr. Kara Mann for putting this session together for over 90 SLPS Health Science students.
Food and Nutrition Services school staff recently attended the Florida School Nutrition Association Conference to receive training in all areas of its Child Nutrition Program. Two St. Lucie Schools employees were recognized for their efforts in improving the nutrition environment at their schools. Eileen Kielbasa, second from the right on the front row, kneeling, at Southport Middle and Carole Schutt at St Lucie West K-8, not pictured, received the School Nutrition Award for the middle and elementary school level, respectively.
Fort Pierce Central students and teachers were joined by St. Lucie County firefighters to celebrate Autism Awareness in April! Mrs. Puentes’ class was met by our local heroes in the bus loop for an interactive tour of two well-equipped fire trucks. Firefighters arrived with their aerial truck and fire engine. Groups of students rotated to see, hear, and ask questions about the exterior and interior components of the aerial truck. Our firefighters graciously allowed students to participate in the fire hose demonstration and showed their longest ladder extension in the fleet. Students found the experience impressive and fun! Two experts from St. Lucie Public Schools recently presented at the FAEDS (Florida Association of Educational Data Systems) Conference. Julia Hilburn presented on Microsoft Bookings and Calendar-based logs. The session was extremely successful. Microsoft was overly proud and shared the information with the SLPS District Representative. Other school districts from across Florida asked if Julia could partner with them to share ideas. This session received a 5-Star Rating! Sally Vandereedt presented on Power Automate and low code solutions. The annual Florida History Day state contest, sponsored by the Museum of Florida History, brought together young historians from across the state. The event was held in Tallahassee where students showcased their research, creativity, and passion for history while vying for a chance to advance to the national competition this summer. 14 students from St. Lucie County (Oak Hammock K-8, St. Lucie West K-8, Lincoln Park Academy, Southern Oaks Middle School, Southport Middle School, Fort Pierce Central High School, Treasure Coast High School, and Somerset College Preparatory Academy) presented to panels of judges at Tallahassee Community College on May 6th. … Read More
On Saturday March 12th, St. Lucie Elementary held its first beautification session, “Redress for School Progress” campaign. It was a success, not only because of the work done, but because of the combined efforts of the community to see this campaign through. Present were community leaders, caring parents, supportive students, and a believing administration and staff. St. Lucie County’s Commissioner, Kim Johnson, an advocate of this movement, has played an important role in the planning with administration. Through the creation of a class garden, Ms. White, Mrs. Hines, and the classroom volunteer Mrs. Snyder, led their VPK students through a multi-sensory learning experience with outcomes that connected both school and home environments. By utilizing the senses of touching, smelling, hearing, tasting, and seeing as well as drawing on background knowledge, the students were fully engaged in all steps of the planting and growing process. As a result, all of the students reaped an abundant harvest of green beans that they were able to take home and share with their families.
St. Lucie Elementary kindergarten teacher, Talaya Reeves, was able to visit all of her students at home to give them much needed supplies. Mrs. Reeves applied for a grant from General Motors and Donors Choose – the Keep Kids Learning Program. She received a $1,000 gift card to Walmart and was able to gift each of her students with food, games, crafts, and other educational supplies. Way to go, Mrs. Reeves! Thanks for always loving your students!
Kinde3rgartners at St. Lucie Elementary School recently wrote thank you notes and made paper doll soldiers for members of unit 1-44 AMD in Fort Hood, Texas. Kindergarten teacher Suzanne Burke hand-delivered the notes personally to her daughter’s unit over Veteran’s Day weekend.
