In light of the recent presidential election, students in Caryol Hallahan’s second grade class at Windmill Point Elemnentary researched information about many of the prominent symbols of freedom and democracy. Students learned about the Statue of Liberty, the AmericanfFlag, the White House, and the bald eagle, among other symbols. In honoring Veterans, Retired Master Chief Eugene Sereg of the United States Navy visited Windmill Point Elementary students recently. Master Chief Sereg shared his experiences and his accomplishments in the Navy. Pictured with Sereg is fifth grade teacher Elizabeth Guanchez, who volunteered to model a real-life soldier’s uniform during war time. Students loved when Master Chief played his bugle.

Windmill Point Elementary students in Patricia Reardon’s third grade class are engaged in working on reading fluency and vocabulary during their reading station. Working together provides students the opportunity to draw on each others’ strengths, fostering confidence as students collaborate. Windmill Point students in Dan Butts’ and Sherri Neri’s classes were treated to a visit from Mr. Neri and his dog, Princess. Fifth grade students have been studying plant and animal adaptations. Princess is a Siberian Huskie and Malmute mix. Mr. Neri explained how Princess has adapted to life in Florida. She has less thickness of hair because it doesn’t get as cold here. Windmill Point Elementary celebrated its first school-wide Kids at Hope Day recently. The day centered on mental time traveling, which involved exploring students’ future life in the following four destinations: career and education, home and family, hobbies and recreation, and community service. Fifth grade students at Windmill Point Elementary School recently enjoyed competing in the events at Field Day. Spirits were high along with the competition. Students remarked that they have a “blast” at Field Day, which shows students how much fun physical activities can be working together. Pictured are Joey Cerbone, left, and Peyton Mertz demonstrating teamwork is the key to success!!

Windmill Point fifth grade students investigated the St. Lucie River’s ecosystem on the River Lilly Eco Boat Cruise. They enjoyed seeing the river that is so wild it was used in the James Bond film “Moonraker” to represent a tributary of the Amazon. It is on the same waters used by early settlers and Native Americans. Pictured are students from Laura Young’s class who enjoyed seeing alligators, turtles and lots of native birds.

Students in Mandy Farrell’s third grade class at Windmill Point Elementary School were recently awarded a PBS game hour for their good behavior. Students paid $20 Wildcat Cash to spend one hour playing games with their friends.Pictured, from left, are Marshall Domond, Conner Henderson, and Daniel Etumnu.

Fifth grade students in Kim Terpening’s music class at Windmill Point Elementary used their bodies and scarves to describe what they hear in music. As students work to reach their learning goal of understanding notation and being able to read and notate music, each student was given a scarf to demonstrate their understanding of staccatos and legatos. Students used the scarves and their bodies to distinguish between these two forms of musical articulation as they listened to “The Syncopated Clock” by Leroy Anderson.

Students in Dorcia Reid’s first grade class at Windmill Point Elementary recently dressed up or created posters of their favorite characters and participated in a parade around the school to showcase their favorite character to parents and fellow students. Following the parade, students shared their books with their classmates and explained why they liked the character they chose.

First grade students at Windmill Point Elementary enjoyed a Black History presentation. Students participated in African American dance, listened to African folktales, and got up close and personal with artifacts brought from Africa. As students listened to a poem about famous African Americans, they got a feel for what their daily life would be like without inventions created by many of those influential people. These Windmill Point students were all smiles after achieving first, second and third place during the school’s Spelling Bee!  Congratulations to, from right, first place winner Talia Ricketts, second place winner Christopher Moore, and third place winner Angel Rodriguez.

Students and staff at Windmill Point Elementary School recently put on their hats and dressed in pink to show their support for two worthy causes. As part of the district-wide Stand Up to Stand Out anti-bullying campaign, everyone pulled out their pink attire and wore it proudly to proclaim that bullying is not tolerated on our campus. As a Community Outreach effort, students and staff made contributions to United Way and held their heads high with their favorite hats. Community Outreach is a school support committee which works to give back to the community and show outhe school’s compassion for others. 

 The Windmill Point Elementary School Relay for Life Committee organized a cancer walk to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.  Shown walking are fifth grade students, from left, Savannah Morlock, Isabella Castillo, and Kiara Santos.

The Windmill Point Elementary School Odyssey of the Mind team recently competed at the World finals event at Iowa State University. It was a creative extravaganza where more than 800 teams from all around the world shared their ideas and work. The Windmill Point teacm competed against 51 others from around the world, and placed ninth overall for Division 1, Problem #2- Weird Science. The students of Windmill Point Elementary School participated in a mock presidential election.  The students took part in the mock election in their technology class and were able to “vote” for president and senator!
