On Saturday, December 14, the Fine Arts Department of Centennial High School hosted its second annual Winter Arts Festival, welcoming students, staff, families, and the community to a day of festive celebration. The event was a magical showcase of talent, featuring captivating performances by our school’s dance teams, art department, drama club, choir, and band. At the school board meeting on May 12th, Karen Knapp, Monte Kosoff, Horace Webb and Roxanne Wells from United Way of St. Lucie, presented plaques to the schools with the highest student and employee campaign fund raisers for 2014-2015. The winners in the Highest Student Campaign were West Gate K-8 ($1,028); SLW Centennial High ($979); Frances K. Sweet Elementary ($503); and Southern Oaks Middle ($335). The winners in each of four employee categories for St. Lucie Public Schools were announced at the annual Night of the Stars gala celebration at Lincoln Park Academy February 22, 2014. The recognition program is sponsored by the St. Lucie County Education Foundation and the school board. Oak Hammock K-8 School media specialist Heather Bolitho was named 2015 Teacher of the Year, and Parkway Elementary School school nutrition manager Angelia Jean-Louis was named 2014 School Related Employee of the Year. Students from from Nikki Rodriguez’s class at Windmill Point Elementary School listen intently to their guide during a recent trip to St. Augustine. Windmill Point’s fourth grade classes went to St. Augustine to deepen their knowledge about Florida history. They visited the Castillo de San Marcos, the Old Jail Museum, the Old Store Museum, and went on a narrated trolley ride around the Oldest City.
Students in Kelita Singleton’s third grade class at Windmill Point Elementary created their own comic strip “storyboard” to help them sequence and summarize information for their Young Author’s book. The students in Erin Cook’s and Melissa Lucrezia’s second grade classes at Windmill Pointe Elementary synergize as they create a circle map. The students’ learning goal to will understand money. Through Common Core curriculum, students are required to show a deep understanding of money. The students are showing all the different ways to make 88 cents through different coin combinations. Windmill Point second grade students commemorated Patriot Day by making a special “thank you” for the Port St. Lucie Police Department. The students have been learning about the roles of community members and the importance of first responders. Officer David Caniello was presented with a “thankful wreath” during a visit to Caryol Hallahan’s classroom on September 11th. He discussed the roles and duties of police officers with the class. He also took time to read the story, The Man Who Walked Between the Towers, by Mordicai Gerstein.
Fourth graders in Joanna Toto’s class at Windmill Point Elementary School are learning about energy. As they progress through the unit, they are creating an “Energy Flip Book” with all of the information they are learning about mechanical, sound, electrical, light, solar, heat and thermal energy. Windmill Point Elementary students in Sherry Spires’ physical education classes are having fun while engaging in exciting, individual and dual manipulative skills development. The development of these skills prepares students for an introduction to team sports activities.
