Southport Middle School media center keeps up with the times

Southport Middle School received funds for the first wave of books to update the Media Center with new and high interest information for students.  Corrine Earley and her husband Jim of Earley Learning Systems Inc. spent some time at Southport helping to shelve about 20 boxes full of new books. Second grade students at Allapattah Flats focus on the details

Students in Eric Redding’s second grade at Allapattah Flats K8 class made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as a culminating activity for their Expository Writing Unit. This activity focused on using specific details and descriptions in writing. Students were asked to list the steps to make the sandwich, and then were invited up to try it!  The students learned that they might not have included all of the steps when making the sandwich, as it didn’t quite work out as planned.  Students quickly realized what a difference details can make in writing. Storytelling is fun at Windmill Point Elementary

Windmill Point Elementary School was visited by storyteller Donna Washington who joined students recently for two special assemblies.  Mrs. Washington resides in North Carolina and travels to schools to tell her wonderful stories. Schools superintendent visits Gaines Academy

Samuel S. Gaines Academy fourth grade teacher Barbara Bennett asked Superintendent Michael Lannon and other prominent local residents to come in and read to the fourth graders to celebrate Black History Month.  Pictured is Mr. Lannon reading the book Follow the Drinking Gourd and talked about Black History Month.  Students  gathered in the hallway to listen to his story.

F. K. Sweet students publish book and donate proceeds to help turtles

Students in Nardi Routten’s fourth grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary School presented a check for over $500 to the mosquito control and marine and coastal management services to buy a sensor machine to help track sea turtles at the February 14, 2012 St. Lucie County School Board meeting.  The students had entered into the Disney Planet Challenge. The local environmental issue they focused on was the restoration of marine habitats with a focus on sea turtles. Treasure Hunter group recognized by school board

Calvary Compassion Church members, a group of caring Treasure Hunters, will be recognized by the Board for a variety of contributions. They organized three huge events for Garden City Elementary, C.A. Moore Elementary and the families of Big Brothers/Big Sisters. They successfully put on a wonderful Fall Festival for families that was held on October 22, on Garden City’s campus. They also coordinated a Thanksgiving dinner give-away for these same families as well as Christmas gifts and needed items. This group of caring people organized everything as well as coordinated the various agencies and volunteers.  

Outstanding volunteers recognized

The district winners in three categories — Youth, Adult, and Senior — volunteers for the year were honored at the February 14, 2012 St. Lucie County School Board meeting. The Youth Volunteer of the Year is Taylor Currie serving at Floresta Elementary School; the Adult Volunteer of the Year, Priscilla Vitagliano serves at Garden City Early Learning Academy; and the Senior Volunteer of the Year, William Arnold who serves at Northport K8 School, is pictured with, from left, Deputy Superintendent Sandy Wolfe, School Board chairman Carol Hilson, Arnold, Northport volunteer coordinator Lynne Gruszka, and principal Glenn Rustay.

Fort Pierce Central history fair winners get set for district contest

Fort Central High School held its Annual History Fair Luncheon at the Cobra Café recently to honor the winners of the school’s event. Over 500 students completed semester long projects in their World History and American History classes. The students with the most outstanding projects were selected to present their projects to a panel of judges. The winners enjoyed a formal luncheon prepared by culinary students of the Cobra Café and sponsored by the Fort Pierce Lions Club as the community celebrates student success. Fort Pierce Central High will be represented by 37 students at the district history fair at Westgate K-8.  Pictured are honored students, along with … Read More

Five Centennial High students complete finance course with perfect scores

Students in three Allied Health Assisting classes at St. Lucie West Centennial High School recently completed a Financial Literacy Program in Mary Higgins’ and Elizabeth Durkee’s classes. The program consisted of 12 online modules and was completed as a class assignment. The program is offered through the nonprofit Debt Management Credit Counseling by Jason Athas, Manager of Educational Programs at Debt Management Credit Corps. He has been teaching these classes at Centennial for about seven years. Jaguars compete at orienteering competition

The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion Orienteering Team recently ventured to Woodpecker West, a part of Ocala National Forest, to test their navigation skills against other Orienteering teams from across the state of Florida. This competition was the first real challenge for the Orienteering Team this year. Each team is sent out into the woods with nothing but a map and a compass to find several points and make their way to the finish line as fast as possible. The Port St. Lucie High School’s four teams placed first, second, seventh and eighth overall in the competition. Fairlawn kindergartners celebrate 100 days of school

Kindergarten students at Fairlawn Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school by spending 100 minutes outside. Students completed centers which included finding 100 pennies, jumping rope 100 times, and writing their numbers to 100 by 10s with sidewalk chalk.

Bayshore Elementary second grade students honor presidents

Bayshore Elementary School’s second graders presented a PTO performance honoring current and past United States presidents. Students researched about the presidents and shared what they learned through writings, songs and skits.  Pictured is Aidyn Davenport (center) portraying President George Washington, along with Ashleigh Maypole (left) and Katelynn Penny-Hall (right), all from Kay De Aguiar’s class.

What is the oxygen level of water?

Students from Nardi Routten’s fourth grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary recently enjoyed an unique  learning experience at Blind Creek Park. Students rotated through four different activities: seining, beach clean-up, water testing, and mangrove planting/measuring.  Jennifer Fleschner, a  parent volunteer helped Jason Moore and Annamarie Brosnihan test the river water for oxygen levels.  The students concluded that the deeper the water level, the higher the oxygen levels.

Hundreds of things to do to count to 100

Aamar Black, Sarah Bartowiak, Annika Huhtamaki, Greyson Cripps, and other first graders at F.K. Sweet Elementary celebrated the 100th day of school by doing math activities with 100 items.  Students practiced different ways to make 100, different ways to skip count to 100, and came up with 100 words that they learned this year.  

Youth volunteer helps F. K. Sweet students

Bobby Kemp, a senior at Lincoln Park Academy, was recently chosen as Youth Volunteer at F.K. Sweet Elementary. He has volunteered in Marla Liberatore’s third grade classroom for the last couple of years. Bobby enjoys spending time with the students and does a little bit of everything, from assisting with math and reading, to teaching them the rules of fair play and basketball.

F. K. Sweet students practice following directions

Recently third grade students in Barbara Whellams’ class at F.K. Sweet Elementary celebrated with a how-to event. Students were given a how-to book of their choice to read. Upon completion, students were asked to write down the directions sequentially and in their own words. Kayla Jungjohan, Julian Nunez, and Ajeya Adams take a break to enjoy punch and snacks before getting back to work.

Former F. K. Sweet students return to help teachers

Junior volunteers and former F. K. Sweet Elementary students Callie Zheng and Amelia Nelson are ace librarians when it comes to working in Barbara Whellams’ classroom library after school. They check book tubs to make sure books are returned correctly, sort out duplicates, and then lexile each book. With well over 5,000 books, lots of assistance is needed and appreciated.

F. K. Sweet students study science vocabulary

Sweet  Elementary, display the vocabulary posters they created.  The posters illustrated the meanings of various vocabulary words from their unit on solids, liquids, and gases.

Students recreate the past in dioramas

Students in Kasey Ascani’s second grade class at F. K. Sweet Elementary are using their knowledge gained from a field trip to the Fort Pierce Historical Museum to construct dioramas for the St. Lucie County Fair’s school exhibit. During the trip, students learned about life in St. Lucie County during the 1800’s. James Ewing, Samia Ahmed, and Luis Herrera are working together in creating Fort Pierce’s P.B. Cobb general store.
