Allapattah students think “Off the paper” while learning math

As part of their math curriculum, Shannon Johnson’s third grade class at Allapattah Flats K-8 school recently started learning strategies for multiplying single digit numbers.  The students have learned how to use equal groups, arrays, and number lines in order to solve a multiplication problem.  Students created number lines on their desks and used them to show their thinking. Allapattah Students Participate in School-Wide PBIS Activities!

Allapattah’s first PBIS Event of the school year was Bingo! Students were able to use Gator Bucks for an opportunity to participate in Bingo! Students that won Bingo received a sweet prize. Students earn Gator Bucks by demonstrating our PBIS Expectations: Responsible, Respectful, and Safe. Allapattah has monthly PBIS events to encourage students to follow school-wide expectations.

Allapattah students jump at the chance to dunk their teachers

Allapattah Flats students go ‘extreme’ with PBS

Students at Allapattah Flats were recently visited by two members of a BMX group as part of a PBS reward. All kindergarten through eighth grade studnets could use their Gator bucs to attend the show and watch the extreme stunts performed by the BMX bikers. Ten lucky students who were top sellers in a school fundraiser recieved VIP tickets to the show where they got to sit in the front row and have a meet and greet with the riders after the show. Students watched in awe as the riders did jumps, flips, and even jumped over the head of their administrator. Pictured … Read More

Allapattah students explore “Because of Winn Dixie” through literature groups

The third graders of Allapattah Flats K8 School could not imagine being any busier!  A large group of  third graders has been participating in a novel study of “Because of Winn Dixie”.  As they are reading the novel, students are involved in a wide range of activities, incluidng completing thinking maps, participating in small group discussions, and creating a character scrapbook. Allapattah Flats K8 second graders learn about their bones by dancing

Allapattah Flats K-8 super second graders just completed learning all about the bones in their bodies.  As part of their learning experience, they listened and danced to the music of “Slim Goodbody”.  Pictured are Jessica Morales and Adam Eyayem participating in the lesson. Students loved getting up and moving to the music. This lesson is sure to stick with them for a while.  

Allapattah recognizes year’s business partner

Allapattah Flats K8 recognized outstanding Business Partner Walmart Distribution Center as its Business Partner of the Year, and attended the recent recognition ceremony at the district office. The company has been instrumental in creating a truly fantastic business partner relationship for Allapattah Flats K8.  Jennie Shalala-Hartman has volunteered her time to reading to our primary classes, and has volunteered at various school functions.  She has created sight word flash cards, cut out needed materials, and is always willing to assist.  She was able to enroll our school in the VAP program,  Volunteering Always Pays, which awarded our school a check for $250.00 … Read More

Allapattah middle grades students create equations

Students in Melissa Nelson’s class at Allapattah Flats K8 School used cards to understand, create, and practice exponential equations. Allapattah middle grades math students use diagrams to summarize data

Allapattah Flats K8 Literacy Committee brings Thanksgiving dinner to two very appreciative families

The Literacy Committee at Allapattah Flats K8 School recently put together two baskets, filled with all the items needed to make a complete Thanksgiving feast. The baskets were donated to two families in need at the school. The receiving families were extremely appreciative of the generosity of all who donated. Allapattah K8 students explore space

First grade students at Allapattah Flats  K8  launch into the study of the sky with a visit to the Hallstrom Planetarium!  Students were able to explore Earth’s place in space by learning about gravity, the Milky Way galaxy, stars, the solar system and Earth.  The students had an engaging time seeing the real-world example of the night and day sky. They saw that the number of stars in the sky was too numerous to count.  They realized that stars are not scattered evenly in the sky and that there are great distances between Earth and other space objects.  The students are … Read More

Allapattah K8 staff bowls for the kids

Staff members at Allapattah Flats K-8 School recently participated in Big Brothers, Big Sisters’ annual Bowl for Kid’s Sake event at Superplay USA. With an 80’s theme, staff members enjoyed sporting their neon shirts and listening to music from that time period. With three lanes in use for Allapattah, each team member got to show off their bowling and athletic abilities. All the money raised will go to benefit Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

Allapattah K8 School fourth grade student is ready to take on Europe

 Allapattah Flats fourth grade student Enrique Crespo has been selected to represent People to People, as a Student Ambassador, for England and France in the summer of 2012.  This is an exciting educational opportunity designed specifically for students and led by teachers. People to People’s mission is to bridge cultural and political borders through education and exchange, making the world a better place for future generations. During the 14-day journey Enrique will learn about British government, Shakespeare’s theatre, Normandy Beach, see the architecture of the Notre Dame Cathedral and explore art at the Louvre Museum. Allapattah K8 girls volleyball takes first place in county tournament

Congratulations to the Allapattah Flats girls volleyball team for winning the county tournament. The girls devoted the past eight weeks preparing and competing for this tournament. Allapattah went 4-0 at the tournament and won in Gator fashion in the championship game 2-0. This is the first county title for the girls volleyball team at Allapattah. Allapattah K8 fifth graders visit planetarium

Fifth grade students from Allapattah Flats K-8 learn about the solar system while visiting Indian River State College’s planetarium. Students created Thinking Maps to organize and explore information they gained at the planetarium about the planets in the solar system. Allapattah Flats’s Gators Learning Force & Motion!

As 5th grade students at Allapattah Flats K-8 finished up their unit for Force and Motion, they brushed up on their Tug-of-War skills. Students were given a recording sheet with four scenarios dealing with balanced and unbalanced forces. Students played out the various scenarios to decide which side had a greater force or a net force of zero. Students loved having the hands on learning time as well as throwing a little physical movement in. Way to go Gators!             

Allapattah Flats VPK Learns About Librarians

VPK visited the library and heard a wonderful story from media specialist Ms. Cutchens. She helped them learn about what a librarian does. VPK is so excited about visiting the library again for the book fair.

Allapattah Flats tutoring students learn history through art

Students in Christine King’s and Felicia Cobb’s fifth grade classes at Allapattah Flats K8 have been working hard during their after school tutoring program. They have been working with the Art in History curriculum where they interact with text that explains the historical significance of an important artifact in history. The students shown in the photo were assigned the Terra Cotta Warriors of the Qin Dynasty (pronounced “chin”). They read about the history of the Qin Dynasty and the significance of the warriors.
