Northport K8 student intern earns A+ from students and teacher

Northport K8 School master kindergarten teacher Melody Nieves and her students give a ringing endorsement to FAU student intern Amanda Bean.  Miss Bean completed two years at Indian River State College and then two years in the Education Department at Florida Atlantic University.  She has recently completed her student internship at Northport K8, first easing her way into the classroom, then interning as the full time teacher and then easing back out of the classroom successfully.  Mrs. Nieves and Miss Bean complement each other’s teaching styles and the experience has been positive for students, the intern and the teacher.  Mrs. Nieves … Read More

Northport K8 kindergartners dazzle

Kindergartners in Nancy Yost’s class at Northport K8 produced a charming display for parents and grandparents recently in their classroom.  Students used singing, verse and rhyme to showcase learning three main requirements for plants to grow: sun, air and water.  Students used verse to portray the months of the year and used pictures to impress with their vocabulary skills.  A few of the words were stumble, journey, absurd and gorgeous.  Much hard work, determination and family support helps to make Nancy Yost’s classroom and her students a success story for all students.  Special thanks to classroom volunteer Sally Poole who is … Read More

Northport K8 says “Bah Humbug” to cancer

Northport K-8 administration, faculty, staff and families united for a terrific cause recently.  The Northport family joined with the American Cancer Society to support Relay For Life held at Digital Domain Park.  The school based organizers, third grade instructor Tiffany Tredor and middle grades math instructor Mehgan Drost generated support for the walk by promoting the Relay For Life continually through the school year to students and families.  This year, thanks to the Relay For Life team, the school met the goal of $2500 and turned in $2696.  Northport K8 tuned into the theme of the Relay For Life this year … Read More

Northport K8 first graders learn shapes

Northport K-8 first graders in Michelle Hicks’ classroom reviewed three dimensional shapes as they prepare for the up coming SAT 10 testing.  Students utilized Venn diagrams to sort  shapes based on whether each shape was rolled, stacked or both.  Students are learning to check faces, vertices and edges to figure our shape.  Mrs. Hicks’ lesson demonstated lively paced instruction, chunking content into “digestible bites” and reflection on information learned. Port St. Lucie High building design students visit UF

Some 31students in Port St. Lucie High School’s (PSLHS) Business & Industry Academy recently visited the Rinker School of Building Construction at the University of Florida. While at UF, students were able to see some of the latest technology in building design and construction, such as 3D modeling software and laser-aided surveying equipment. The professors discussed the opportunities at UF in programs such as Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, and others. Team from Palm Pointe walks in Relay for Life

The team from Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition participated in the Relay for Life held at Digital Domain Park recently.  Students and staff proudly walked to support those affected in some way by cancer.  Many fundraisers were done at school to support the American Cancer Society.  Thank you to all those who helped support this great cause, it was truly appreciated!

Allapattah Flats second graders enjoy learning about wild animals

The stupendous second graders at Allapattah Flats are going wild! The students recently enjoyed a visit from Miss Tracy of the Hobe Sound Nature Center. While engaged in the program, the students learned about such topics as why protecting the rainforest is important, conservation, and animals and their habitats. Palm Pointe team wins regional stock market challenge

A team of students from Hillary Cruz’s seventh grade civics class at Palm Pointe Educational Research School in Tradition recently won first place for the regional division of the Florida Stock Market Challenge.  This is a web-based educational tool used by thousands of students around the state each semester to help teach economics, finance, current events, math, social studies and technology. The winners will receive a $100 check for the school, a $50 gift certificate for Papa John’s Pizza, and first place certificates. Floresta Elementary students encourage their peers

Kindergarten through fifth grade students at Floresta Elementary School supported one another with a school-wide “Tunnel of Encouragement” Rally the Friday before FCAT testing began. Kindergarten through second grade students and teachers lined the hallways armed with posters and pompoms, chanting heartfelt words of encouragement as third through fifth grade students made their way to the cafeteria for some motivational activities and words of wisdom. Windmill Point Odyssey team second in state competition

Students encouraged to visit the Savannas park

A student led organization out of the Savannas State Park Preserve on Walton Road organized an event to encourage teens out of the house on a Saturday afternoon and enjoy the park. Port St. Lucie High students study animal evolutionary adaptations

Biology students from Port Saint Lucie High School recently visited the Brevard Zoo to expand their Florida history and evolution curriculum.  Students started the morning with a presentation on Florida’s fossil past and then spent the rest of the day exploring different evolutionary adaptations animals have that allows them to be successful in their environments.  Comparisons of different biomes and animals that occupy them were embedded in the day. For many students, this was their first trip to a zoo.

Port St. Lucie High students explore the Everglades

Students from several science classes at Port Saint Lucie High School recently ventured into the Everglades to explore this fragile ecosystem and learn about the history of Florida’s water flow and its effects on native flora and fauna.  Students began the morning with an airboat tour through the river of grass and concluded with lectures and exhibits on the Florida alligator, panther, a variety of turtle species and many others.

Three women honored for academics and philanthropy

Fort Pierce Central High School dean Bonita Monica Williams, Forest Grove Middle School teacher Christine Santos-Nurse, and Fort Pierce Central High School student and future pediatritian Sabrina Valencia LaFrance were honored by the International Haitian Inter-Cultural Association, Inc . (IHICA) service organization at a recent celebratory event. The honorees were selected for their academic careers, altruism, philanthropy, and service to others.
