On May 29, 2015, the Transportation Department bid farewell to Terry Smith, an employee with the district for 32 years, and Phil Vitale, both transportation employees. There will be big shoes to fill, as they both had a wealth of knowledge about our district. They will be greatly missed.

St. Lucie Public Schools put together an energy advisory board, consisting of vendors, engineers, district staff, utility company personnel, architects, engineers, school board members and others, to address ways to reduce utility costs. Rather than just considering individual schools with immediate needs, the group outlined a long-term plan for the entire district, looking at systems that would need to be replaced in five, ten and fifteen years. Students from Mrs. Applebee’s Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) program at Fort Pierce Central High School recently participated in a training day with the St. Lucie County Fire Department. This invaluable experience provided students with the opportunity to complete a variety of educational and simulated training. The training day was packed with a variety of educational activities, including HIPAA Training, CPR/AED skills, a Fire Station Tour, and a Flight Rescue Team presentation. On September 27, high school guidance counselors and graduation coaches from across the District had the privilege of touring and learning about five outstanding businesses in St. Lucie County. The stops included ABC Medical, The Porch Factory, Maverick Boat Group, Southern Eagle Distributing and PGA Golf Club. While on the tour, participants learned about job opportunities for students that address the skills gap, as identified by the Economic Development Council, in the areas of healthcare, manufacturing and skill trades.
The Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County (EDC) and the Treasure Coast Manufacturers Association (TCMA) introduced 15 high school guidance counselors from St. Lucie Public Schools to some of the county’s most prominent manufacturers. The inaugural School Counselor Tour showcased the wide variety of rewarding careers in manufacturing available to their students right here at home. Fifth grade Francis K. Sweet Elementary School student Rida Ahmed emerged as the champion speller for the second consecutive year in the 2012 St. Lucie County Spelling Bee, winning on the word bromeliad. Second place went to Northport K8 School seventh grade student Jared Diago, and in third place was fourth grade WestGate K8 School student Sreya Banik. Ten students will move on to regional competition next month. Congratulations to all 32 winners who participated. Student Assistance Program successfully providing evidence-based prevention curricula in St. Lucie County schools The Student Assistance Program (SAP), which is a free, in-school prevention program, is in the process of completing another school year of successful substance abuse and violence prevention programming in St. Lucie County. SAP, a program of New Horizons of the Treasure Coast, Inc., is funded by the Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County and DCF’s Prevention Partnership Grant.
