School District Grade Increases in St. Lucie County

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The district grade awarded to St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) increased from a C to a B this year. This is a significant accomplishment despite the fact that learning gains were not included in the calculations. It is important to note that two SLPS realized multi-grade increases: Rivers Edge Elementary moved from a D to an A and Morningside Elementary advanced from a C to an A. Treasure Coast High School Students Encourage Second Graders to Recycle As part of their community service project for Skills U.S.A., Arielly Dias, Arthur Waddell, and Olivia Wallman visited several of the elementary schools in St. Lucie County including Palm Pointe, Bayshore, and Manatee in an attempt to emphasize the positive effects that recycling has on a community and its environment. On Thursday, February 11, Rivers Edge 3rd Graders were gifted their very own dictionary. Representatives from Rotary International brought one for every 3rd grader in the school. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) Superintendent E. Wayne Gent accepted a rebate check from Florida Power and Light (FPL) in the amount of $97,440.00 during Tuesday’s School Board Meeting. The rebate resulted from the recent installation of a new Thermal Energy System (TES) at Lakewood Park Elementary. The District has had a long-standing commitment to maximizing the efficiency of its facilities, and the installation of such systems in local schools has proven effective. African American History Month Proclamation

February begins the annual observance of African American History Month, celebrating the past and present achievements of African Americans. In February, 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, proposed the establishment of Negro History Week to honor the history and contributions of African Americans to American life. In 1976, the week-long celebration was expanded to a month in honor of the nation’s bi-centennial. Mrs. Latricia Woulard, St. Lucie County 2016 Principal of the Year, read the Proclamation during the February School Board Meeting.

February is National CTE Month

Career and Technical Education Director Kathie Schmidt presented highlights of the District’s programs. Students presented the Governor’s Annual Proclamation in recognition of February as National CTE Month at the February School Board Meeting.

STAR Awards Presented for Exemplary Service

The STAR award recognizes and honors employees each month for demonstration of exemplary customer service. The following employees were recognized by the Board in February: Nakysha Dennis (Dan McCarty Middle School), Michele Rubenstein (Mariposa Elementary – Volunteer), Joe Baio (Lakewood Park – Facilities/Maintenance), Renee Lang (Transportation Dept.- Bus Driver), and Pinkie Smith (Food Service Dept.).

MLK Parade Winners Recognized

The Grand Parade is the capstone event of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration. Once again this year, all of our schools participated in the parade. Representatives from the Commemorative Celebration Committee honored the schools who won awards in the parade.

CTA/CU Mentor Grants Awaraded

Northport Hosts Living Legend and American Hero!

Northport K-8 School students have been working diligently this year with teachers, veterans, Gold Star Families and Mrs. Gruszka in the Media Center to educate each other, their families and the community about the Medal of Honor, Gold Star Families and World War II. Kindergartens Being Teachers at F. K. Sweet

Students in Melanie Francisco’s kindergarten class had a blast playing “Teacher For a Minute” while practicing addition/subtraction.  Jadia Tate used counters to solve the problem on Lyla St. Hilaire’s card.   This was a great activity including movement and communication skills with classmates.
