Students from Fort Pierce Central’s aerospace program, along with their instructor Dr. Kevin Adkins, recently visited the eighth grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition. They shared data they had collected from a wind tunnel they had designed at Central. The students shared information about factors that affect flight and the impact of wind moving over an airfoil. After the presentation, the students were able to use the data collected and make graphs that recreated what was expected in the experiments that Dr. Adkins and his students had conducted. Eighth grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition have been working recently on deepening their knowledge of matter and its behavior by interactively looking at the properties and changes of atoms in different types of matter. Students focused their efforts on becoming experts in matter, mass, weight, volume and density. Students worked to calculate and identify the mass, volume and density of all different types of matter during their three days of laboratory investigation. First, students looked at different regular and irregular shaped (dominoes/bell-etc) household objects, and determined the objects mass and volume. Mrs. Migliore’s class had a BALL having a vocabulary word “SNOWBALL” fight!  Students threw paper with vocabulary words from their reading unit across the room, they then had to grab another ball, open it, and explain that word to their partner. Fun was had by all! Additionally, to celebrate Literacy Week, 3rd-grade students in Mrs. Van Allen’s class buddied up with 1st graders in Mrs. Migliore’s class for some buddy reading. Students took turns reading their favorite books and shared some of their reading poems. It was a great afternoon!

Students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition experienced the voting process by participating in a mock election for the President of the United States. Students read non-partial literature and reviewed real ballots before voting.  The simulated election connected students to current events and deepened their knowledge of the patriotic process. Pictured casting their votes are third graders Dustin Condra, left, and Sebastian Rodriguez.

The students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently enjoyed shopping at the Spring Book Fair. Books from every genre and reading level were available for sale. Students could also sign up for a new service called Storia, which is for e-books. Those who signed up received five free e-books. Pictured, right, is third grader Nicholas Polanco as he takes advantage of this great program, with dad and younger brother Maddox. 

Superintendent Genelle Yost read her favorite story, “The Polar Express,” to the second grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently. The students presented the superintendent with thank you cards they had created and asked her questions about when she was a little girl. It was a rewarding experience for the students. Fourth grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently spent the morning unraveling math and science mysteries about pumpkins! Through hands-on activities, students measured the weight, height, and volume of their pumpkin. They then created a bar graph comparing the data that they collected. Students predicted how many seeds were in their pumpkins and also used estimation strategies on a HUGE jar of candy corn. Seventh grade students in Meredith Andrus’ math class at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition enjoyed an interactive math challenge, Who Am I?  Students were given a problem and placed the index card on their forehead without looking at it.  Given an answer bank, students solved and matched the problems of their classmates to the answers.  After solving all their classmates’ answers, the one answer left would be the answer to their own question.  Without ever seeing their own question, students were able to answer their own question and find out who they were.  The students enjoyed this fun, … Read More

Third grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition chose a fictional book from the media center and described the main character’s traits in the story. Students explained how the character’s actions contributed to evidence regarding their traits, motivations or feelings. Additionally, students designed a flow map, and wrote a response to literature. Lastly, students decorated and designed their pumpkin to look like their main character. This Pumpkin People Project is a Palm Pointe favorite and a tradition for many years to come! Pictured is Kristina White proudly displaying her pumpkin decorated as a dog and holding her report.

Students are having a fabulous time enjoying cookies and hot chocolate at their book club.  Over 60 students, ranging from grades 5-8, are currently participating in a book club reading, The House With a Clock in It’s Walls, by John Bellairs.  Students meet in the mornings with Media Specialist Amy Fazzalaro to read and discuss the book.  After completing the book, everyone will meet at the movie theater to view the film.  It is exciting to see our students thrilled about reading.    

The eighth grade Algebra 1 Honors students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition were getting their chapter one test review via QR Codes.  QR Codes are the square barcodes that have more product information. QR codes were created free on line and when scanned came back to the student, on their device, with the questions the students needed for their review.  Students used the codes through a scavenger hunt activity.  Once they solved the question they had scanned, students had to find the next question with the answer they got and continue until they completed all questions on the … Read More

Students in the third grade classrooms at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition have been learning about different reading skills. To heighten the students’ awareness of these skills and to incorporate a creative, hands-on activity, every year third graders create Pumpkin People projects. Students partner to read a storybook and organize their information into various maps to show cause and effect relationships, character development, vocabulary, and elements of a story. Middle School Artists studied the use of mixed media to create a unique animal collage with watercolor, newspapers, oil pastels, and India ink. Their creative masterpieces are proudly displayed in the Palm Pointe front office.  

Third grade students in Laurie Boyer’s class at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition used a cereal box to create an informative project about a president of their choice.  Pictured is Athresha Kalluri, who chose President Barack Obama and included a report about the early, middle and late years of his life.  In addition, she posted words and pictures that described the president on the cereal box.     

Fifth grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition used a variety of resources to compare and contrast two Native American cultures from different regions of America. Palm Pointe’s Environmental Club participated in the “A Day in the Life of the Indian River Lagoon” program on October 4th along with approximately 1,800 students and teachers from over 30 schools, with the help of over 30 natural resource expert organizations, engaged in hands-on science exploration at over 32 sampling sites along the Indian River Lagoon. The last full week of October, St. Lucie Public Schools celebrated Apple Crunch, where everyone was encouraged to bite into an apple at noon. This activity was part of Food Day 2013, which is a nationwide celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. Employees and students alike enjoyed the activities, and teachers planned lessons around it to educate about the nutritional value of apples. Cafeteria managers arranged for apples to be donated to any classroom that wanted to participate.
