Some 31students in Port St. Lucie High School’s (PSLHS) Business & Industry Academy recently visited the Rinker School of Building Construction at the University of Florida. While at UF, students were able to see some of the latest technology in building design and construction, such as 3D modeling software and laser-aided surveying equipment. The professors discussed the opportunities at UF in programs such as Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, and others. Port St. Lucie Biomedical students recently engaged in a valuable hands-on learning experience at Keiser University, collaborating with Dr. Weir and his dedicated team. This unique opportunity allowed them to delve into the complexities of disease transmission through a compelling HIV simulation experiment. Working with simulated samples representing both infected and non-infected individuals, the students took on the critical task of identifying the participant who initiated the spread of the disease within the study group. Port St. Lucie High School biology teacher Leslie Taylor was nominated to receive the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award (OBTA), sponsored by the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT), which recognizes an outstanding biology educator grades 7-12 in each of the 50 U.S. states, Washington, D.C, Canada, Puerto Rico, and overseas territories. Lucie High School Jaguar ROTC Battalion have qualified to go to the state drill meet by placing in first to third place in their events in the district drill meet hosted recently by Fort Pierce Central High School. Students learned Jamaican cuisine recipes and cooked up entrée choices such as Stewed Oxtail, Curry Goat, Jerk Chicken, Jerk Pulled Pork served with Pigeon Peas, Butterbeans, Rice, and Johnnycakes. On Sunday November 11, 2018, Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion participated in the Veterans Day Memorial Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park. All cadets who attended demonstrated reverence and gratitude towards veterans and those we lost. Cadets paid reverence to Floridia Service Members who were taken prisoner of war and/or declared missing in action. Angela Hayle, a Rotarian and business leader from ACCH Insurance Agency, along with Northport K-5 guidance counselor, Diane Crumpton, gathered children together at Northport to offer each child a special bag of Christmas gifts. The Rotary Club usually hosts an Annual Children’s Christmas Party. This year, due to Covid, the club made a stop to the Northport Media Center. Everyone loves a good book. Six cadets from the Jaguar Battalion visited Bayshore Elementary to read to first grade classes. Each cadet was assigned to a class room. After finishing the book, the cadets asked the kids questions about the book. All of the cadets, Ashlee Seipel, Zachary St.John, Robert Hopkins, Jamie Triplett, Jaffrey Murankus and Allison Miakisz, said it was a great opportunity to read to the class and see the children smile.

Marching in this parade is a tremendous honor and privilege for the Port Saint Lucie High Jaguar Battalion. Several schools competed in this meet from all over Florida (29 teams in total and 10 schools). The competition consisted of five different events including 3-mile team run; tire flip; Raider fitness challenge whereby the teams moved through a course consisting of a 10-yard low crawl, a 40 yard 20-30lb sandbag carry, an obstacle to either go over or under, a speed agility maze, a 120lb object carried 50 feet, and a turnaround point to repeat the course in reverse; rope bridge; and cross country rescue including a litter carry of 110 lbs. The school’s first preseason football game of the year was held on August 21, 2016 at Port Saint Lucie High School. The Color Guard provided support before the game. The Color Guard cadets were: Allison Wilhoit, Hayley Pollard and Morgan Emerson, commanded by Tesa May. During the game, the Honor Guard cadets provided help with parking. The Port Saint Lucie Jaguar football team played against Olympic Heights High School from Boca Raton. The Port Saint Lucie Football team won with a score of 41-0.
The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion had the privilege to work with Guardians for New Futures and Communities Connected for Kids, to collect toys for kids during the holiday season. Port Saint Lucie High School staff and Jaguar Battalion cadets sponsored many kids to make sure they have a memorable holiday season. We were able to collect over 100 gifts this year.
On Friday, September 25, Port St. Lucie High School JROTC Jaguar Battalion’s Color Guard presented the colors at the first football game against John Carroll High School. With COVID-19 restrictions hindering a lot of our activities, the color guard was ecstatic to finally honor our country through a cadet led event. Commanding the Color Guard was National Flag Bearer Cadet Captain James Mikovsky accompanied by Cadet Captain Isaiah Hylton as State Flag Bearer, Cadet Captain Noah Cook as right Guard, and Cadet Captain Elijah Hylton as left Guard.
The 25th annual POW/MIA ceremony was hosted by Chapter 556 of the Vietnam Veterans of America at Veterans Memorial Park. Cadets from the Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion showed their support and paid their respects to our missing and captured veterans. This ceremony showed our appreciation to the people who defended our country and recognized that we will never forget them. Present at the ceremony was a table set for one.
