Congratulations to the SLPS Schools of Excellence! The State Board of Education designates a school as a School of Excellence if the school’s percentage of possible points earned in its school grade calculation is in the 80th percentile or higher for at least two of the last three school years. This program was created by the 2017 Florida Legislature.
Later this spring, three Saint Lucie Public Schools: Morningside Elementary, Oak Hammock K-8, and West Gate K-8 will each receive a Buddy Bench. A Buddy Bench is anti-bullying, and keeps plastic out of the landfill! It’s a brightly colored bench made from recycled plastic caps that’s also a ‘safe space’ – signaling when a child has a need, and teaches all of the children about the environment. St. Lucie Public Schools is working to increase participation in its partnership with South Florida Commuter Services (SFCS), which is a program of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). SchoolPool is a software system that helps to connect interested parents who live near one another so that they can plan such activities as a “walking” school bus, bike pools, car pools, and the like. The target audience for this program is parents in St. Lucie County who live within two miles of their student’s school; however, the program is open to any interested parents or guardians. Traditional and virtual students were able to celebrate and exercise through a school-wide Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart activity. Village Green Environmental Studies School did an AMAZING job and at last count, the school has raised $11,808.00, with donations still coming in. Our top fundraiser was kindergartner, Miliana Gorman, who earned all the prizes including a gold medal and a cape! We are so proud of our students.

To show support for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the great work being done, recently the staff and faculty at F.K. Sweet Elementary School dressed in purple, which symbolizes the hope and effort that a cure will soon be discovered for the disease. The entire school is highly involved with other fund-related activities supporting ACS.
When St. Lucie Sheriff’s Officer Wheeler was assigned to support Fairlawn Elementary School, it was apparent that a positive connection was established right away. With appreciation for the support she provides and wanting her to feel like Fairlawn was her home, teachers and students began writing letters to her and making plans to decorate her office on the school’s campus.
