Science Classes Learn About Photosynthesis at Palm Pointe

Eighth grade students in Mrs. Huszar’s and Ms. Pulcini’s science classes at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition recently worked with inquiry-based strategies to fully understand how photosynthesis and cellular respiration are dependent on each other. Science Bowl at Village Green

It was a scientific event to remember at Village Green Environmental School as 5th-grade students participated in the annual Science Bowl. This is a true testament that these 5th graders are part of Village Green’s rising scholars, as they originally ended in a three-way tie between Mrs. Corley, Mrs. Smith, and Dr. Venzen’s Homeroom students. In the end, victory was achieved by Dr. Venzen’s “Patriotic Pioneers.” Congratulations to all of our scientific world changers! We are so proud of you!

Schools superintendent visits Gaines Academy

Samuel S. Gaines Academy fourth grade teacher Barbara Bennett asked Superintendent Michael Lannon and other prominent local residents to come in and read to the fourth graders to celebrate Black History Month.  Pictured is Mr. Lannon reading the book Follow the Drinking Gourd and talked about Black History Month.  Students  gathered in the hallway to listen to his story.

Schools superintendent earns most donations to kiss the pig

St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent Genelle Yost garnered the most donations in a month-long fundraising activity to benefit Kids at Hope, a mentoring initiative of the Roundtable of St. Lucie County, earning the right to kiss a pig at the St. Lucie County Fair. Yost exceeded the funds raised by the five other local women community leaders in the contest, and topped the winner of last year’s all-male team in contributions. “I truly wanted to be the one to get to kiss the pig,” Yost remarked, adding appreciation for all of the friends, colleagues and community members who supported her … Read More

Schools recognized for support for Relay for Life

At the May 28, 2013, St. Lucie County School Board meeting, the American Cancer Society (ACS)and the organizers of the St. Lucie West Relay For Life recognized the contributions of the staff, parents and students at 12 local schools who participated in the April, 2013 event, and thanked them for their hard work, volunteer service, and dedication. St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) will resume normal operations on Monday, September 18. The bells will sound on time, normal transportation will pick back up, before- and after-school activities will continue, and the District’s Student Assignment Office will be open and prepared to support families from this community and from other areas who need to enroll students.  The Student Assignment Office’s temporarily location is on the Fort Pierce Westwood campus (1801 Panther Lane, Fort Pierce). Schools of Excellence!

Congratulations to the SLPS Schools of Excellence! The State Board of Education designates a school as a School of Excellence if the school’s percentage of possible points earned in its school grade calculation is in the 80th percentile or higher for at least two of the last three school years. This program was created by the 2017 Florida Legislature.

Schools Create a “Buddy Bench”

Later this spring, three Saint Lucie Public Schools: Morningside Elementary, Oak Hammock K-8, and West Gate K-8 will each receive a Buddy Bench. A Buddy Bench is anti-bullying, and keeps plastic out of the landfill!  It’s a brightly colored bench made from recycled plastic caps that’s also a ‘safe space’ – signaling when a child has a need, and teaches all of the children about the environment. SchoolPool to Help Organize Alternative Transportation

St. Lucie Public Schools is working to increase participation in its partnership with South Florida Commuter Services (SFCS), which is a program of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).  SchoolPool is a software system that helps to connect interested parents who live near one another so that they can plan such activities as a “walking” school bus, bike pools, car pools, and the like.  The target audience for this program is parents in St. Lucie County who live within two miles of their student’s school; however, the program is open to any interested parents or guardians.  SFCS’s website includes a … Read More

School Wide Jump Rope and Hoops For Heart

Traditional and virtual students were able to celebrate and exercise through a school-wide Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart activity. Village Green Environmental Studies School did an AMAZING job and at last count, the school has raised  $11,808.00, with donations still coming in. Our top fundraiser was kindergartner, Miliana Gorman, who earned all the prizes including a gold medal and a cape! We are so proud of our students.  

School staff wears purple to symbolize hope for cancer cure

To show support for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the great work being done, recently the staff and faculty at F.K. Sweet Elementary School dressed in purple, which symbolizes the hope and effort that a cure will soon be discovered for the disease. The entire school is highly involved with other fund-related activities supporting ACS.

School Resource Officers

When St. Lucie Sheriff’s Officer Wheeler was assigned to support Fairlawn Elementary School, it was apparent that a positive connection was established right away. With appreciation for the support she provides and wanting her to feel like Fairlawn was her home, teachers and students began writing letters to her and making plans to decorate her office on the school’s campus. On Tuesday, December 1st, Superintendent E.
