SLPS Top Students Compete in the Commissioner’s Academic Challenge

Teams from five SLPS High Schools competed on Friday, January 28th in this year’s Commissioner’s Academic Challenge. The team from Treasure Coast High School earned the most points in the 2nd round academic challenge and were declared the winners! Questions covered a wide range of topics including Mathematics, Science, Literature, Music and Foreign Language. Cheers echoed across campuses today as three deserving teachers were named as finalists for St. Lucie Public Schools’ (SLPS) Teacher of the Year. Makeda-Ione Brome (Lincoln Park Academy), John J. SLPS Supports March of Dimes March for Babies

Students and teachers from St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) along with private pre-kindergarten partners rallied in the month of January to collect dimes in support of March of Dimes March for Babies. On Wednesday, students and teachers convened at Lawnwood Stadium to run the track in segments. Collectively, the segments represented the distance of the total number of dimes collected if they were to be placed side-by-side. 58,880 dimes were collected! In distance, that equates to approximately 2.5 miles; in dollars, that equates to $5,880.00. Starting Monday, June 10, 2019, St. Lucie Public Schools moves to a Monday through Thursday work week. Access to District/Annex Offices and school sites will be 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM unless otherwise posted. Walk-in customer hours for the Human Resources Department, located at 501 NW University Blvd. in Port St. Lucie, are from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Thursday. SLPS Student Recieves FPRA Youth of the Year Award

Molly Grow, a 7th grader at the Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie (CAST), was honored by the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA) Treasure Coast Chapter as their “Youth of the Year.” Molly is the chapter’s only student member and has been involved in many community projects and has even led her own fundraising event. Her contributions were recognized at the FPRA Annual Board Installation and Award Luncheon on September 21 at Indian River State College. SLPS was on display at the St. Lucie County Fair! Schools created their own exhibits with the theme of “Race to Greatness”. The exhibits were judged and cash prizes will be awarded to the winning schools. Congratulations to all! SLPS & St. Lucie Public Library Art Project

On Friday, April 19th, students from St. Lucie West Centennial High School, St. Lucie West K-8, Northport K-8, Westgate K-8, and Rivers Edge Elementary came to the district office to participate in the creation of a permanent art installation on the new Port St. Lucie Library. The students worked with the artist Justin Shea to create Henri Matisse-inspired cut-outs which will be turned into mosaic tiles on the exterior of the new library.

SLPS Schools Receive Kits to Improve Needs of Students with Language Impairment

This year the Exceptional Student Education, Student Services, and Office of Teaching and Learning Departments collaborated and identified needs for students with language weaknesses. Materials were purchased through the IDEA American Recovery Funds grant to help improve language skills for students with disabilities who are identified with a Language Impairment. Each school received two kits each so that the speech-language pathologists and interventionists can work to improve the needs of students with disabilities who demonstrate a weakness in language which will, in turn, improve their listening, speaking, and reading comprehension skills.
