SLWK-8 Students Participate in Future Chef Competition

On Saturday, October 24,  SLWK8 students competed as a team in the Future Chef Competition held in Ft. Pierce at the Green Market. Students competed against the local high schools and one other K-8 school in this event.   The Shark Chef Team (Casie Schulz,  Laravanessa Cano and Gabriella Quimby) showed well with their appetizer of Savory Shrimp Persimmon and Plum Skewers over Orange Ginger Jasmine Rice and served an entree of Banh Mi with Watermelon Salad.  The judges particularly enjoyed that many flavors from the market were showcased and added that our chefs exhibited outstanding culinary skills.       … Read More

SLWK-8 Students Learn About Pioneers

The SLWK-8 4th Grade students recently took a field trip to Ft. Christmas and Alligator World. The students learned about how pioneers lived in early Florida and were able to grind corn and churn butter. Then they traveled to Alligator World where they observed animals in their natural habitats and explored the tools used by native Americans and settlers to survive in Florida.

SLWK-8 Student’s Artwork Selected for Exhibit

Tama Jeanchery’s artwork entitled “Rooted Heart” was recently entered in The Dali Museum’s 2016 Florida statewide Student Surrealist Art Exhibit: Between Dream and Reality. We are proud to announce that it was chosen to be exhibited at The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, FL this summer. Tama is an 8th grade student at SLWK-8. Her art teacher is Mrs. Jaime Mazzo. SLWK-8 Speakers Bureau

St. Lucie West K8 (SLWK8) is excited to welcome our first monthly Speakers Bureau speaker in partnership with Dr. Donna Mills, SLPS School Board Vice-Chairperson. Each month, SLWK8 along with other schools, hosts guest speakers who encourage and motivate students to make good choices, use positive role models and learn to find their passion and purpose in life. SLWK-8 Shark Chefs Prepare for Competition

Casie Schulz and Bailey Layle, two 8th grade SLWK-8 Shark chefs, are preparing Red Velvet Roulades for the District Culinary Showcase to be held at the St. Lucie County Civic Center on Wednesday December 9th from 5 to 7 PM. Their teacher is Ms. Jennifer Tremblay.

SLWK-8 S.A.G.E. Students Show Their Holiday Spirit

The SLWK-8 elementary gifted S.A.G.E. classes participated again this year in a holiday community service project. The students decorated holiday bags for the “Meals on Wheels” program in our area. This program provides and delivers meals to senior citizens who are homebound. These students have volunteered their time to show their holiday spirit and citizenship during the holidays!

SLWK-8 Odyssey of the Mind Places 1st

St. Lucie West K-8 participated in the Palm Regional Competition for Odyssey of the Mind on Saturday, March 9, 2019. There were five problem-solving categories. SLWK-8 Jr. Thespians Win at Festival

The SLWK-8 Jr. Thespian Troupe wowed the audience at their 4th annual Thespian Showcase performance on November 19th. In addition, they performed at the District 3 Junior Thespian Festival on December 5th and brought home 11 scores of EXCELLENT and 6 scores of SUPERIOR. Great job, Ms. Tsunoda and our talented thespians!

SLWK-8 hosts Summer School

Ms. Serrano’s ESY PK-1 Hearing Impaired class participated in an interactive review of their camping vocabulary words. This activity required students to identify items they would need on a camping trip. Once identified, students located camping items that were strategically placed in the classroom and packed it in the class duffel bag.

SLWK-8 Grinch Day

SLWK-8 kindergarten teachers declared that December 11th would be Grinch Day. The students embraced this concept and went all out! Happy Grinch Day!

SLWK-8 Gifted Students Serve the Community

Our S.A.G.E. Academy at SLWK-8 (1st through 8th grade advanced/gifted students) participated in a community project to help senior citizens have a brighter holiday season. The students had to create holiday images onto 250 bags which would later be filled with items for 250 senior citizens who receive services from the Meals on Wheels program throughout the Treasure Coast. These holiday-filled bags bring joy to those senior citizens receiving them along with an appreciation that they are important and thought of by others in the community. SLWK-8 students in grades 3-8 were treated to a Pep Rally for FSA on Tuesday, April 30th. The administration was assisted by the drumline from Centennial High School, as well as some of their basketball players. SLWK-8 First Graders Learning about Technology

Over the summer, Mrs. Nemeth, 1st grade teacher, received five tablets for her classroom through a Donors Choose proposal. Seesaw is a student-driven digital portfolio that empowers students to independently document what they are learning at school. Students can use photos, videos, drawings, text notes, links, and the recorder to show what they know. After publishing a piece about Fall, students were able to take a picture of their work and record themselves reading it. Families also have the ability to see their child’s work through the Seesaw app and respond with comments and likes.

SLWK-8 Color Run

The SLWK-8 My School Color Run sponsored by the Student Council was a huge success! Thank you everyone for your participation! Special thanks for Ms. Renee Taylor, Mrs. Shawna Portee, and Dean Lauren Kosinski for their hard work in organizing this event. Everyone had a colorful time!

SLWK-8 Celebrates Perfect FSA Scores with Limo Lunch

Congratulations to the following students who earned a perfect score on FSA last year and were treated to a limo ride to lunch on November 5th: 4th grader, Maria Nolasco 8th grader, Roseanne Rodriguez 8th grader, Ryan Rodriguez The students were accompanied by their parents and the SLWK-8 Administration for this special lunch!

SLWK-8 Breakfast with the Mayor

On May 18, Mayor Gregory Oravec spent the morning enjoying breakfast and answering candid questions from Student Council Members. Mayor Oravec was gracious enough to spend much of the morning visiting with many of the students, and was presented with an honorary key to the school to commemorate his visit.

SLWK-8 Band Director Selected

Ms. Jennifer Rosser, the band director and music teacher at St. Lucie West K-8 School, was honored with the opportunity to be the clinician for the Heartland Middle School Honor Band of Highlands County recently. The honor band consisted of the best band students from nearly 11 middle schools of the surrounding cities in the Highlands County area. Ms. Rosser rehearsed the band for a mere 12 hours of rehearsal over two days culminating in a concert the second evening at the Alan Jay Wildstein Center for the Performing Arts located on the South Florida State College campus.
