Southport Middle presents Sleeping Beauty

 The Southport Middle School performing arts presented the Disney Play “Sleeping Beauty”.  There were performances for the students during the day and for Morningside Elementary School students.  Parents and community members were invited to come to the evening performances. It was a huge success with great theatrical performances done under the direction of Mary Osking. Southport Middle opens Canes cafe

Southport Middle School students were the first to spend Cane Cash to have lunch together at the new PBS hot spot on campus. Principal Lydia Martin and Assistant Principal Nicole Telese stopped by to see students enjoying cool conversation in the relaxing atmosphere, dining in comfort with their friends at the new PBS Canes VIP Luncheon located in the SPMS cafeteria. Southport Middle Keeps Their Bus Drivers Warm

Southport Middle School is overflowing with gratitude for our amazing bus drivers!  On Thursday, when the temperatures were in the 40s, the bus drivers of Southport Middle School were greeted with a cup of hot cocoa and a special note to keep them warm.  The note read, “A special thank you from us, because you do so much on the bus.  Wrap your taste buds around this cozy hot cocoa-it’s like a warm hug in a mug.”   Southport Middle School staff is extremely thankful for all the work our bus drivers put in each and every day.  Huge shout out … Read More

Southport Middle junior honor society members thankful for support

Southport Middle Hosts Parent Night

Southport Middle School recently hosted a parent night for families with students enrolled in high school credit courses such as Algebra 1, Geometry, and Spanish 1. The event provided valuable information about how students were selected for these advanced courses and the academic opportunities they offer. Parents learned how these courses open doors for their children in high school, including access to honors programs, dual enrollment, and early college pathways. Southport Middle has unique guest for Young Authors event

Southport Middle School’s Young Authors celebration included a video conference with author Douglas Quinn.  With the help of grandson, Southport Middle sixth grade student Quinn Coleson,  Quinn has written four adventure series novels featuring his grandson as the main character.  St. Lucie County’s ITS department supported  Southport’s media center to set up the video conference with Mr. Quinn, who resides in North Carolina with his wife.  Also presenting at the celebration was Scripps newspaper contributor Hillary Copsey, who spoke to students and parents about the wonderful books that the sixth through eighth grade students submitted.  Winning submissions will go on to a district level competition. … Read More

Southport Middle chorus participates in regional event

Eleven students representing the Southport Middle School Chorus joined their voices with other middle school singers from around the Treasure Coast to participate in 4-County Middle School Honor Choir at Indian River State College. Each year, middle and high school choruses from Martin, Indian River, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie counties come together to rehearse and perform a concert in the recent event at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center on the main campus in Fort Pierce. Southport Middle celebrates Sunshine State young readers

Southport Middle Celebrates PM2 Growth

At Southport Middle School, students celebrated their PM2 growth with yummy treats!  Students were rewarded for making growth in one subject (reading or math) with chips and Takis.  However, students who made growth in both subjects (reading and math) were rewarded with chips/Takis as well as a Nacho Bar.  The Nacho Bar consisted of chips, meat, cheese, sour cream, salsa, and jalapenos.   Students enjoyed creating their own nachos. Southport Middle art department and cafeteria staff conduct contest

Southport Middle School art teacher Judith Hough and her students, along with the cafeteria manager and staff ran an art contest for My.Plate. The students were able to choose from each food group and create a drawing using food as the base for the picture.  Students were awarded School Lunch “Let’s Grow Healthy” pencils for participating.  First place student Shaqwan Brown won a $25.00 gift card to Walmart.  Second place students received a jump rope and My Walking Fitness Guide and Recorder for Kids.

Southport Memorial Garden

Lynn Hoke, Southport Middle School Science Club Advisor, led students on a weekend event to beautify our school’s memorial garden and transformed it into a butterfly garden. It looks beautiful!!! Southport Middle School Heart & Sole team had an exciting afternoon practicing for their Fall 5K Celebration Run. The fourth season of Girls on the Run (GOTR) at Southport is underway! Our team of 15 brave and beautiful girls will participate in Heart & Sole, a physical activity-based positive youth development program that addresses the social, mental and emotional challenges particular to middle school girls. The 10-week program inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Southport Drama wows audience with outstanding performance of Little Mermaid Jr.

The Southport Middle School Drama Department wowed audiences in 4 sold-out shows with their performance of “Little Mermaid, Jr.”  With a cast and crew of over one hundred students and volunteers, the show premiered fabulous costumes, a colorful set, and showcased talented singers, dancers and actors as they told the tale both “Under the Sea” and “Part of That World” above the sea.

Southport Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation Week started off at Southport with administration and staff members meeting to put gift bags together for our teachers and staff. Each bag contained sweet treats for the week, fun projects to enjoy, kindness notes from students and colleagues, and a commemorative distance learning #HurricaneStrong tee-shirt. Teachers were invited to drive by and pickup up their gift bags and a nice lunch box from administration. Southport Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr.

Southport Middle School teachers, staff, and students came together to commemorate Martin Luther King’s legacy.  Southport band students, led by Mr. Brandon Pasquence, played a variety of songs. Our cheerleading squad, led by Ms. Jennifer Filippini, performed numerous cheers.  Ivan the Ibis, Southport’s mascot, was represented by 8th grader and student council president, Michael Nevin-Demmons.  Coach Zoerhof, along with several student athletes were also in attendance. The artwork created by Southport’s students, all focused on the theme “Change Begins with Me,” was showcased throughout the float. Southport Carnival

On October 31st, 2019, select cadets from our Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion Raider Team volunteered to support Southport’s quarterly PBS carnival. Ten cadets, who previously attended Southport, monitored bounce houses and obstacle courses while promoting the program to students considering JROTC the following year. Cadets featured in the pictures below are Cadet Private Robert Pollino, Cadet Sergeant First- Class Alexis Wilson, Cadet Private Catherine Caballero and Cadet Private Mery Fuentis. Southport Art in the Park

Despite the rain and rearranged plans, everyone enjoyed Art in the Park in Southport Middle School’s cafeteria. Students beamed with excitement as they moved from one delicious activity to the next and enjoyed scrumptious appetizers donated by local businesses, faculty and staff. Students were encouraged to play with their food in the “Food Art” station, where they used fresh produce as paint brushes to create their own masterpieces. A beautiful fresh fruit and vegetable “basket of plenty” was raffled off.
