Southport Presents The Aristocats Kids

Southport Middle School Drama was proud to present Disney’s The Aristocats Kids this past Thursday, April 24th. Working cooperatively with Port St. Lucie High School Drama, alumni returned to Southport to student direct this classic Disney musical, which was met with overwhelming praise and joy by an audience of students, families, and friends. The arts are the traditions and events that bind a community together, and we are grateful for the massive support that we felt from our wonderful audience. Congratulations, Mr. Quinn, and to the amazing cast of young performers. Thank you for supporting the arts in our schools!

Southport Middle Welcomes 6th Graders

Incoming sixth graders had an exciting and engaging morning at Southport Middle School during their transition camp. The event was designed to help students acclimate to their new environment by introducing them to SPMS expectations and encouraging social interaction through various activities. One of the highlights was a campus-wide scavenger hunt, which allowed students to explore and learn the layout of the school. Breakfast and lunch were provided, ensuring students were well-fed and energized throughout the day. Southport Middle students testing their hypotheses

In Jessica Allen’s seventh grade science class at Southport Middle School, students have been learning about the scientific method. Students created their own hypothesis statements on a problem given to them and they got to test their statements. Delsin Pillay is testing his hypothesis statements using paper airplanes and a variety of variations within his testing environment to see if adding weight to a paper airplane’s wings makes it fly straighter.

Southport Middle students show appreciation to U.S. military

Southport Middle School’s Bobcats recently participated in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program by sending a touch of home to the U.S. military. Southport Middle students select just the right Book Buddy book

Southport Middle students present mini-art show at local pizzeria

The Southport Middle School faculty, staff and students recently hosted a mini-art show at a local business partner restaurant. The faculty and families came to enjoy the beautiful works of art from the school’s talented students. The presentation highlighted students’ art work from the first semester art classes. It was also a delightful opportunity for the community to come out and enjoy the wonderful works of art created by Southport students in Katherine Avra’s sixth through eighth grade classes. Southport Middle students participate in art contest for healthy eating

Southport Middle School art teacher Judith Hough teamed up with the school’s cafteria manager and staff for an art contest for My.Plate. Southport Middle students learn math with cooking

At Southport Middle School, students in Adrianne Mendoza’s seventh grade math class from the Panthers team made rice krispie treats by using math to determine half a portion. Pictured is Hannah Spurr, who had the opportunity to use a variety of measuring tools to determine how much was needed for a single portion. Students also worked in pairs and divided the recipe in half. With their knowledge of how to divide fractions and measurement, the students were able to create a delicious treat that was fun to eat.

Southport Middle students learn about photosynthesis

Students in Jessica Allen’s seventh grade science class from Southport Middle School learned about how plants convert light energy to chemical energy and store it in the bonds of sugar (photosynthesis). Southport Middle students learn about energy transformation

Students in Linnea Norton’s sixth grade science classes at Southport Middle School studied energy transformations by building a roller coaster for a marble. They started by designing a unique roller coaster using a student chair, about four meters of copper tubing insulation, blue painter’s tape, masking tape, a marble and a two ounce plastic cup at the end to catch the marble. Students were able to identify the locations where the energy transformations occurred. Southport Middle students enjoy book swap

The media center at Southport Middle School hosted a book swap coordinated by Mary Kurtz-Seiden and Angela Mas.  Students were able to bring in a new or gently used novel and swap from a variety of high interest new scholastic books.  Popcorn and lemonade were served as students were given the opportunity to discuss the novels and swap with their friends.  Pictured at right is Brian Velasquez, and left are  Jamie Triplett, Kaylee Kegley, Sydney Dundee, Morgan Reed, Luke Hannah, Keala Sanders and other students enjoying some treats and picking out books to take home.

Southport Middle students engage across curriculum

Southport Middle School eighth grade students are engaged in many exciting activities across the curriculum. History and Language Arts teachers Nancy Filippini and Maureen Dakin are collaborating to assist students in drafting their DAR essays due in October. This year”s topic is to support Forgotten Patriots of the American Revolution. Students in Karen Allen’s science classes are diving into scientific method and inquiry, and students are actively investigating topics of interest, while Julie Lecluse and Lauie Barnard engage students with finding slopes, intercepts, and variation in math classes. Pictured, from left, are Aileen Vasquez, Morgan Ochwat, Nicole DiPietro, and Viviana Torres.

Southport Middle students decorate reading counts tree

Southport Middle School’s Reading Counts tree had so many outstanding favorite book ornaments that they overflowed and had to be mounted on a board to be displayed. Teacher Evelyn Watson, pictured seated, joins a few of the students who created a small booklet to show their favorite book and why they liked it. Southport Middle students and PTO help defray expenses

Kelly Lunt’s eighth grade homeroom class at Southport Middle School collected the most box tops for the first half of the year and were able to celebrate with a pizza party courtesy of the school’s PTO.  The PTO at Southport Middle School encourages students to make a difference for their school in a positive way.  There are many activities that benefit the students, community and the school as a whole that the PTO promotes, and members always have some kind of “special treat” for the students to show appreciation of their efforts!

Southport Middle SRD Helps Out in the Weight Room

At Southport Middle School, Physical Education classes host an array of sports. Southport students have the opportunity to learn how to improve their health in a variety of ways.  During third quarter our physical education coaches are focused on flag football, whiffle ball, and handball.  Twice a week, our coaches switch things up by also offering weight training, capture the flag, and a variety of outdoor sports. Southport Middle Sixth Graders Learning to Care for Their Community

Allison Lankow, the Special Projects Coordinator for the Port St. Lucie Public Works Department did a presentation for Southport’s 6th graders on litter prevention and recycling. The students actively participated in the presentation to better understand how being involved in litter prevention and recycling makes their community a better place for both humans and animals alike.

Southport Middle School’s Tip-A-Teacher Night

Southport Middle School recently enjoyed a wonderful evening of community partnership during Tip‑A‑Teacher Night at Texas Roadhouse. Students, families, staff members, and local patrons came together to support SPMS, creating an atmosphere filled with school pride and generosity. Teachers enthusiastically stepped into the role of hosts, assisting the Texas Roadhouse wait staff and connecting with families outside of the classroom in a fun and meaningful way. Southport Middle School’s Fishing Club

 SPMS Fishing Club members have been hard at work learning the many components that make fishing both a skill and a science.  All of this preparation paid off during their recent trip to a nearby pond, where students had the chance to put their knowledge into action. The outing was a great success, with plenty of exciting catches and lots of smiles to go around. Experiences like this help students build confidence, patience, and an appreciation for the outdoors. Southport Middle School’s Family Literacy Night Was a Huge Success

Parents, students, and families who attended Southport’s annual Family Literacy Night enjoyed a great night of music, games, food, and fun. Literacy teachers planned activities like Reading Rocks, Beat the Clock, and Musical Literacy while others served pizza and popcorn — all to provide families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encourage kids to read.
