FPC Exceptionalities Class Cooking Up Success

On Monday, August 25, students in Ms. Baechle’s 5th-period class rolled up their sleeves for a deliciously hands-on culinary experience. As part of their ongoing curriculum focused on essential life and employment skills, students learned how to prepare donuts using biscuit dough—a simple yet effective introduction to basic cooking techniques. The activity included crafting both vanilla and chocolate glazes from scratch, allowing students to explore flavor combinations and practice measuring, mixing, and timing.

Adding a special touch to the day, Ms. Renda shared her own homemade ricotta donuts with the class, offering students a taste of a more advanced recipe and sparking conversations about culinary creativity and cultural traditions in food preparation. Her contribution not only delighted the students but also demonstrated the value of sharing personal passions and skills in a learning environment.

This engaging activity is part of a broader effort to equip students with practical tools for success beyond graduation. By integrating cooking into the classroom, Ms. Baechle and Ms. Renda are helping students build confidence, develop teamwork, and gain experience in following instructions—skills that are vital in both personal and professional settings. The donut-making day was a sweet reminder that learning can be both meaningful and memorable.
