Fort Pierce Central High School students recently attended National Portfolio Day in downtown Miami – an event specifically for visual artists and designers. Instructor Heather Blackmon championed the opportunity for twelve of her advanced Drawing, Painting, and Photography students to attend and showcase their portfolios, which included mixed medium, photography, digital art, illustration, drawing, and painting.
According to Blackmon, National Portfolio Day is an opportunity for those who wish to pursue an education in the visual and related arts to meet with representatives from colleges accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Representatives review student artwork, discuss programs and answer questions about professional careers in art. National Portfolio Day serves a variety of purposes. Most importantly, it is designed to help further the artistic development of young artists by bringing together experienced college representatives to review artwork and provide feedback. “The experience of attending National Portfolio Day is a small taste of what a professional art program can look like,” she said.
Blackmon’s students received excellent feedback on their work and were encouraged to keep working in their perspective mediums. After participating in National Portfolio Day, the students visited the Wynwood Walls in the Design District as well as several local art galleries in the area.
