On Friday, February 20th, the Cobra Café was filled with traditional décor, flavor, and community as the school came together for our annual Black History Month luncheon. Hosted by Chef Strell, Chef Swertfager, Mrs. Leroy, and the Sunshine Committee, the celebration honored the richness of Black culture through food, performance, and shared appreciation.

The event opened with a warm welcome and was highlighted by a special performance from the Cobra Dancers, whose energy and artistry brought the room to life. Their choreography paid homage to the movement traditions deeply rooted in the African and African American experience, adding a dynamic visual tribute to the afternoon.
Cobra nation enjoyed dozens of dishes prepared by various faculty and staff representing flavors from across the African culture. The culinary team—alongside dedicated volunteers—crafted dishes that celebrated heritage, community, and the importance of cultural storytelling through food.
Ms. Gardner, Varying Exceptionalities teacher, shared heartfelt appreciation for the event, saying:
“As usual, you {Mrs. Leroy] put together a wonderful program that highlighted the culture and contributions of Black people in the United States. Thank you so much for all that you do to ensure that we are celebrated…and thank you [to all those that contributed dishes] for taking the time to prepare a delicious meal that represented much of the African diaspora; my stomach thanks you as well.”

The luncheon served not only as a meal, but as a moment of connection—an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to come together in recognition of the creativity, resilience, and contributions of Black Americans. Thanks to the chefs, organizers, performers, and volunteers, the Cobra Café once again transformed into a place of celebration and learning for all.
