Celebrate National Deaf Awareness Month

September is National Deaf Awareness Month, a time dedicated to promoting understanding, inclusion, and support for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) community. Across the nation, schools, organizations, and individuals are recognizing the rich contributions of Deaf culture and working to break down barriers in communication and accessibility. The month highlights the importance of equal rights, greater awareness, and the unique identity of the Deaf community, helping to create more inclusive spaces in both education and society.
At Fort Pierce Central High School, Mrs. Edwards, the speech and language pathologist, is making a meaningful impact by educating her students who are deaf and hard of hearing about Deaf culture. She provides a supportive environment where students can learn about their identity, build confidence, and feel a sense of belonging. By promoting awareness and understanding within the school, Mrs. Edwards helps her students navigate social and academic challenges, while educating them on the importance of self-advocacy. Her efforts ensure that students who are deaf and hard of hearing are not only supported, but celebrated for who they are.
