Middle School Students STEM and Career & Technical Education- Energy & the Environment with Mr. Fess (Northport K8)

Sixth grade students in Mr. Fess’ STEM class created working wind-turbines out of old toy motors as part of their “Energy & the Environment” curriculum.  All students designed, created, tested, and improved their own creations. Students rated their electricity production using a multimeter and made changes to their builds to improve their efficiency. Criminal Justice at SLW Centennial Connects with St. Lucie County Sheriff Office

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team presented to criminal justice students at St. Lucie West Centennial High School. Cybersecurity Program Highlighted at Florida Career Pathways Network Symposium

The Career & Technical Education Department attended and presented at the Florida Career Pathways Network Symposium.  The presentation was focused on the Cybersecurity program at Lincoln Park Academy with Mr. Alan Mathison.  Mr. Mathison presented details on the Cybersecurity grant and technological advances newly implemented at Lincoln Park Academy for middle to high school students enrolled in the program.

Fort Pierce Central High School HOSA Students’ Holiday Community Service Event

The Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) chapter from Fort Pierce Central High School came together to share holiday joy at Lake Forest Assisted Living facility. Students delivered holiday cheer with gifts for the residents and holiday songs. HOSA is a student-led organization for high school students enrolled in a Health Science program and interested in pursuing a career as a health professional.

Industrial Biotechnology Program Virtual Field Trip

SLPS middle school students attended a virtual field trip to Treasure Coast High School to visit the Industrial Biotechnology program.  This event was hosted by Mr. John Williams (Industrial Biotechnology educator) and his Biotechnology students, along with the district’s Career and Technical Education department.  Students touring this program were able to watch live lab demonstrations and learn about the Industrial Biotechnology career pathway.

Career & Technical Education Programs Showcased at Treasure Coast Business Summit

Multiple Career and Technical Education (CTE) program educators and students showcased their industry related skill sets at the Treasure Coast Business Summit.  CTE programs represented were Technical Design, International Business, Building Construction Technologies, and Allied Health.  This was a great opportunity for our students to network and demonstrate their knowledge and skills for our community members.

Allied Health Career Day at Fort Pierce Central High School

Fort Pierce Central’s Allied Health students participated in a Career Day with Legacy Private Care of the Treasure Coast (Mark Hassett and Rosanna Bennett) and Dr. Perry Lloyd medical office (Leydy Juaruz). Students gained knowledge of industry demand and opportunities in St. Lucie County and on the Treasure Coast.  Appreciation goes to Ms. Charles, Mrs. Young, and Mrs. Beaumier for welcoming the business partners to connect with their students.    

Career & Technical Education’s Professional Development Hosted at Keiser University

Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers from middle and high school programs participated in multiple professional development (PD) sessions at Keiser University, Tradition Campus. The CTE Educators gained further insight into the articulation agreements, scholarship opportunities, and continuing education from Keiser University representatives (Mrs. Linda Fitzpatrick, Dr. Nicol, and Dr. Reed). Professional development opportunities included Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches & Treasure Coast, hosted by Ms. Emma Green and Mrs. Katie Thompson. SLW Centennial’s Criminal Justice Student Completes Judicial Internship with Judge Maynard

St. Lucie West Centennial’s Criminal Justice/Law Academy student, Vincent Chin, was selected from all the local high schools to intern with U.S. Magistrate Judge Shaniek Maynard.  Vincent and Judge Maynard worked together from July 5 until August 5, and was an official member of Judge Maynard’s Chamber Staff.  This prestigious internship was based on teacher recommendations and afforded Vincent the chance to earn community service hours during his time as an intern. Fort Pierce Westwood Academy: The WEST Prep Magnet’s Criminal Justice Academy Virtual Field Trip

Middle school students from St. Lucie Public Schools attended a virtual field trip for Criminal Justice without leaving their campus. The virtual field trip was hosted by Ms. Mildred Brown and the Career & Technical Education department on the campus of Fort Pierce Westwood Academy: The WEST Prep Magnet. The virtual field trip included a demonstration of crime scene investigation, fingerprinting, and the 911 Telecommunications training. Virtual field trips allow middle school students to explore CTE programs for career exploration initiatives.

CTE Medical Program Students Participate in Virtual Employment Sessions

Career & Technical Education (CTE) Medical program seniors from all over the district participated in various virtual employment sessions. Local industry partners represented the following agencies: Cleveland Clinic (Tradition, Martin, and Indian River), Legacy Private Care of the Treasure Coast, and CareerSource Research Coast. Students attending the sessions were from Allied Health, Health Unit Coordinator, Nursing Assistant, or Pharmacy Technician CTE programs.

Nursing Assistant Students Visit Keiser University, Port St. Lucie Campus

St. Lucie West Centennial High Schools’ Law Academy Hosts St. Lucie Sheriff’s Drone Team

St. Lucie West Centennial High School students from Mrs. Angela Baumgarten and Mr. James Nichols’ Law Academy (Criminal Justice) participated in a live drone demonstration. Members from the St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office Drone team led this demonstration, along with an engaging conversation with students on the use of technology and legalities surrounding the use of unmanned aircraft in law enforcement.  Deputies David Leigh (School Resource, Explorers Advisor, Swim instructor, and Drone Pilot) and Trevor Boyce (Drone Pilot and Road Patrol) were the guest speakers and led the presentation. .

St. Lucie Medical Center’s DEI Forum

St. Lucie Medical Center’s physicians and medical residents hosted a virtual DEI forum for St. Lucie Public School’s Health Science, Pharmacy Technician, and Veterinarian Assisting students. Students were engaged in a presentation and discussion on steps to take academically in accomplishing their goals to become a physician. Thank you to Dr. Tim McNamara, Dr. Kara Mann, Dr. Josephin Mathai, Dr. David Nguyen, and Dr. Thomas Matese for putting this session together for Career and Technical Education students and being a sustained business partner.

Circuit Judge, Prosecutor, and Public Defender Visit St. Lucie West Centennial High Schools’ Law Academy

St. Lucie West Centennial High Schools’ Law Academy (criminal justice program) welcomed Judge Rebecca White with Anastasia Norman (prosecutor) and Jennifer Nelson (public defender) from the Circuit Court. There was a panel discussion for each guest speaker to explain their roles in the pretrial process and the criminal justice system as a whole. This presentation was very engaging for students as speakers provided realistic case discussion, recommendations for future professionals, benefits and challenges of their career.  

EDC’s School Counselor & Educator Virtual Tour – Targeted Industry Exploration

The Economic Development Council (EDC) in collaboration with St. Lucie Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) department hosted a live session for school counselors, graduation coaches, CTE educators, and school and district administrators. Participants gained insight into the industry, growth, and employment opportunities within St. Lucie County. The presenters were Two Way Radio Gear, Indian River Select, and The Porch Factory. The presentation highlighted the upcoming Ready to Work Manufacturing and Distribution Boot Camp.
