Students in Kristin Griffin’s kindergarten class at F. K. Sweet Elementary love learning about different cultures. After learning about the Chinese New Year celebrations, the students were able to try some authentic Chinese dumplings. After trying out their chopsticks on Fruit Loops, Janya Baptiste, left, and Alex Sgouris were ready for the delicious dumplings.
F K Sweet’s annual art fair to raise money for the art program was a huge success. Students had more than 10 crafts to chose from and some did them all. Families enjoyed the night out together supporting the school. Pictured, from left, are Emma Rizzo, Giovanna Mangeri, and Lani Chambers, they are working on making scratch art masterpieces.
Frances K. Sweet kindergartners recently celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday! Students in Melanie Francisco’s class loved having Frankie Lott read “Marvin K. Mooney, Will You Please Go Now?” Mr. Lott is the president of the Kiwanis group who sends guest readers to Frances K. Sweet every year. The students enjoyed activity packets and goody bags.
Murals and models of the ocean floor were created by the students in the challenge program at Frances K. Sweet Elementary. Students worked cooperatively on a class mural diagramming features of the ocean floor and the animals that live there. Varsity cheerleaders from Lincoln Park Academy hosted cheer camp at Frances K. Sweet Elementary recently. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade had the opportunity to learn cheers, chants, and enjoy a dance. The students then performed for a packed crowd at an LPA’s boys’ basketball game.
Students in Melanie Francisco’s kindergarten class at Frances K. Sweet Elementary School enjoyed sorting and graphing during a recent math lesson. Pictured, Carmela Bustamante, left, and Jaden Jones had fun sorting, counting, and graphing a popular candy. The whole class was surprised to see that orange and blue occurred the most, and green occurred less.
Students in Eleanor Baker’s third grade class at Frances K. Sweet Elementary proudly display their North American country projects. Students created maps, timelines, brochures, and postcards after they researched and wrote about important events, people, and places of their chosen country.
Students in Donna Hellums’ first grade class at Frances K. Sweet Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school with a day full of fun and engaging activities. Students in Melanie Francisco and Michelle O’Keefe’s kindergarten classes at F. K. Sweet Elementary recently enjoyed throwing a Florida snowball. After studying a unit on snow and winter, the students went outside and engaged in a snowball fight using white yarn pom poms.
Three students from Frances K. Sweet Elementary were excited after participating in the Martin Luther King, Jr. spelling bee at C. A. Moore Elementary. Fifth grade students from Frances K. Sweet Elementary took a trip back in time to the Civil War period in a field trip recently. The students were able to see authentic uniforms, supplies, and equipment. The trip ended with a firing of the cannon. The joy is real as Animesh Saha, fourth grade student at Frances K Sweet Elementary School won the school spelling bee against 18 other school mates, third through fifth grade. The F.K. Sweet Elementary Drama Club recently presented “A Fairy Tale Christmas” for parents and students. Fairy tale characters from all of the favorite classics try to prevent the evil stepmother from ruining Christmas by spreading good cheer with a little help from the Fairy Godmother! Fourth grade students in Kim Yoder’s class at Frances K. Sweet Elementary School celebrated mathematical success with ice cream sundaes. Fourth graders have been completing multiplication quick quizzes and post tests throughout the year demonstrating skill, accuracy, and speed. Those students who possess those qualities were rewarded with an ice cream sundae buffet. With over 20 different toppings, bowls were piled high with sweet rewards for sweet success. Students in Cara Ackenbrack’s third grade class at F. K. Sweet Elementary, have been doing a unit of study on penguins. They concluded this unit by making “Pet Penguins” out of recycled soda bottles. Each child painted their own pet penguin, named it and wrote an imaginative narrative story that included both themselves and their new pet. F. K. Sweet Elementary second grade students Lion Belcher, left, and Chandler Miller, are anxiously awaiting Santa’s visit to the school a little early. The school’s student council sponsored its annual Breakfast with Santa, and there was a large turnout. Parents and students enjoyed breakfast and crafts and then the long anticipated visit and picture with Santa.
Fifth grade students in Donald Logue’s science class at F. K. Sweet Elementary School recently completed an investigation to determine which objects would create the biggest impact crater when dropped from a height of one meter. Students used two different types of marbles and one piece of sandstone as their variables. Students first found the mass, then the volume, and finally the density of the objects to use as a basis for their hypothesis. Kindergartners in Kristin Griffin’s class at Frances K. Sweet Elementary School practiced sorting and classifying leaves. After finding that the leaves could be sorted in a couple of different ways, the students were then asked to sort and classify in their favorite way, color, size, or shape.
