St. Lucie Public Schools educators recently immersed themselves in hands-on ocean conservation by attending the Guy Harvey Foundation (GHF) Educator Professional Development Workshop in Key Largo. Hosted at the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) campus, the specialized training focused on “The Art and Science of Coral Reefs,” equipping teachers with innovative, STEAM-based strategies to bring marine science and ocean stewardship directly into their classrooms.
Representing St. Lucie Public Schools were dedicated educators from two local elementary schools:
Morningside Elementary: Mrs. Bolton, Mrs. LaChance, and Mrs. Panaccione
Floresta Elementary: Ms. Briand and Ms. Lindh
During the workshop, the teachers explored interactive lessons that blend artistic expression with core marine science principles. By studying coral reef ecosystems, marine biodiversity, and real-world conservation challenges, they gained valuable instructional toolkits, resources, and hands-on activities. Returning home as certified Guy Harvey Conservation Educators, these teachers are now set to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards right here on the Treasure Coast.
