On Thursday, April 9, St. Lucie West Centennial High School proudly hosted a Title I Parent Workshop on Conflict Resolution in the Media Center, providing families with practical tools to strengthen communication and build healthier relationships with their high school students.
The workshop featured Mr. Singletary, a guest presenter through Kids at Hope, who engaged parents in meaningful conversations about navigating conflict during the teenage years. This collaborative event was made possible through the partnership between St. Lucie West Centennial High School, the School District, and Kids at Hope, reinforcing a shared commitment to supporting students and families both academically and socially.
During the session, families explored the idea that conflict is a normal part of growth and, when handled effectively, can lead to stronger relationships and mutual respect. Mr. Singletary shared strategies that were especially relevant for today’s youth, emphasizing calm communication, empathy, and problem-solving as essential skills for both parents and students.
Key topics included:
- Staying calm and avoiding escalation
- Listening to understand multiple perspectives
- Using “I” statements to express needs respectfully
- Asking open-ended questions and reflecting on what is heard
- Validating feelings—even when there is disagreement
- Working together to establish clear expectations, boundaries, and consistent consequences
Parents also learned long-term strategies for resolving conflict collaboratively, such as brainstorming solutions as a team, agreeing on action plans, and creating regular opportunities for open conversation at home. These approaches help foster trust, reduce defensiveness, and encourage accountability between parents and teens.
In addition to conflict resolution, families received valuable tips related to stress management and emotional well-being, including guidance on maintaining healthy habits, supporting mental health, and creating low-stress home environments—especially important during academically demanding times.
The workshop reflected the school’s ongoing commitment to Title I family engagement, ensuring parents feel equipped, informed, and supported in helping their children succeed. Translation services in Spanish and Haitian Creole were also offered, reinforcing inclusivity and access for all families.
St. Lucie West Centennial High School extends sincere thanks to Mr. Singletary, Kids at Hope, district partners, and our families for making this event a success. Together, we continue working to strengthen school-home partnerships and support positive outcomes for all students.
