A Future in Science: Path from Biotech to Biology

Kelsey is currently dual-enrolled in the AICE program. She is on track to complete her associate’s degree in general biology through IRSC in the spring and is part of the Biotechnology Academy at Treasure Coast High School. She is in the third year of the program, with an emphasis on molecular biology, following a year of study in agricultural science. When she leaves high school, she intends to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology or biochemistry at a Florida university and take advantage of any internship opportunities in that field.
“Biotech has helped so much in my high school career because we have the space to address more complex topics that aren’t focused on as much in general science classes. This program has also given me a chance to learn technical skills through laboratory practice that is hard to find anywhere else at a high school level. My teacher, Mr. Williams, has been very dedicated to the subject and has gone above and beyond to find us opportunities such as summer internships, unique labs to pair with our content, and help with ISEF. Biotech has touched on subjects that many don’t learn about until college, so it’s a perfect segue into university-level content. In terms of certifications, both the agricultural and molecular certifications will show that I am proficient in the content and skills needed to be successful in practice, and helps me stand out as an applicant for internships, entry-level jobs in labs, and as a university student.”
