Law Enforcement, Navy and Partners in Education Invade NPK-8 for Read Across America

NPK-8 celebrated Read Across America school-wide with the help of the St. Lucie Sheriff’s Department, the City of Port St. Lucie Police Department, the U.S. Navy Recruiting Station, the Big Brother Big Sisters of Indian River County, and our partners in education, First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie. Overall, the school had 31 volunteer readers who helped spread the joy of reading to our students.
The Read Across America initiative for NPK-8 was a three-fold effort that targeted specific grade levels with engaging content and new books to their library.
The K-2 portion of the event welcomed readers into the classroom for a storytime break, snacks, and a fun extension activity.
The 3-5 graders participated in our Passport to Literacy, where staff members set the scene of selected books from various genres. For example, we had a poetry station that was set up like a French café, an informational section that explored whales versus sharks, a station that discussed life choices and problem-solving, and then we took it to the wild west for the Wonky Donkey.
Our middle school students enjoyed Pop into Reading  — which was a 20-minute book talk with volunteers. The session started with a book trailer, followed by a small excerpt of the book and then a Q&A.
Administration and the entire Literacy Team are extremely grateful for all the agencies and their employees, including our dedicated partners in education who volunteered their time to make this day a success.
