St. Lucie West Centennial High School senior Nicole McHenry is one of only 16 student athletes chosen from over 700 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) member schools to serve on the FHSAA Student Advisory Committee. The purpose of the committee is to educate student athletes on FHSAA policies. Nicole was nominated by SLWCHS Athletic Director John Messina and has played volleyball and softball for all of her four years at Centennial.
Ron Parker, head football coach at St. Lucie West Centennial High School, was selected by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association to coach for the South team in Florida’s 2011 North/South All Star game in Sebring. Senior defensive back Ty Jackson, pictured with Parker, was also selected to participate in the game.
Fairlawn Elementary School recently celebrated the 11th Annual Inclusive Schools Week. Media Specialist Buster Nelson read a different book about children with disabilities to each grade level. He read Leo the Late Bloomer about Developmental Disabilities to kindergarten, Andy Finds a Turtle about physical disabilities to first grade, Danny and the Merry Go Round about Cerebral Palsy to a second grade, Luna and the Big Blur about visual impairments to third grade, Knots on a Counting Rope about blindness to fourth grade, and View from our Shoes about siblings of children who have brothers or sisters with special needs. Robbie Baumgarten, a second grade student in Rachel Lutha’s class at F.K. Sweet Elementary is using a part of his Daily Five Reading time to reflect and write about what he has just read. Students are afforded choices within the literacy routine on a daily basis.
Students at F.K. Sweet Elementary recently enjoyed an after school dance sponsored by the PBS Team. The proceeds from the dance will be used to purchase award items for each classroom teacher. This conga line is enjoying one of many different kinds of dances.
The recent Scholastic Book Fair at F.K. Sweet Elementary was a huge success. Students were able to browse before making their final selections of favorite reads. Pictured getting ready to shop are students Alexicia Barron and Derek Paredes.
Fourth grade students at F.K. Sweet Elementary in Amiee Cripps’ class are currently focusing on Florida history and are proud of their Florida Native American projects. Each student created a diorama focusing on an aspect of their life and culture.
Students at F.K. Sweet Elementary that have read a total of 10 Florida Sunshine Books were recently treated to an ice cream sundae party by Jeannie DuPell, media specialist. The goal is to read all 15 books by the end of spring.
Honor Roll Assemblies were held prior to winter break, and seen celebrating Principal’s Honor Roll is F.K. Sweet Elementary third grade student, Justin Adrian, and his father Todd Adrian, a teacher at Fairlawn Elementary School. Students making Principal’s Honor Roll must obtain A’s in all subjects, including art, music, physical education, and conduct.
ESOL paraprofessional at F.K. Sweet Elementary, David Morales, visits various classrooms throughout the day to assist students. His services are avilable to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. He helps to translate for parents during conferences and other school meetings. Camerino Diaz, pictured, has been working with him for several years.
The beautiful voices of the F.K.Sweet Elementary School’s choral group Sweet Sounds rang loud clear during the recent Winter Holiday Concert. Pictured with the music teacher Jan Christensen are fourth and fifth graders that practice twice weekly for concerts and other vocal events.
Students in Donna Hellums’ first grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary celebrated the winter holidays with a pajama party and a viewing of the Polar Express. They compared and contrasted the book and the movie.
Fifth graders at Frances K. Sweet Elementary School got an in depth look inside the ear. Students enjoyed a lesson presented by Joe Mutter from Mutter’s Hearing Center on the anatomy of the ear and the benefits of taking steps now to prevent hearing loss later in life. In this picture, Mr. Mutter is showing students Allaysia Miller’s auditory canal and eardrum. Students also took hearing tests and experienced what life would be like with moderate hearing loss.
The Student Council officers and classroom representatives were all on hand to assist with students having their pictures taken with Santa at the recent Saturday morning breakfast at F.K. Sweet Elementary. The breakfast was organized by sponsor Michelle Adrian, and enjoyed by many families.
The sixth grade geography bee was held by the social studies department at Southport Middle School. Pictured here is the second place winner from the Marlins team, Jacob Wynn.
The Southport Middle School performing arts presented the Disney Play “Sleeping Beauty”. There were performances for the students during the day and for Morningside Elementary School students. Parents and community members were invited to come to the evening performances. It was a huge success with great theatrical performances done under the direction of Mary Osking. Santa arrives at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition by fire truck for the annual “Breakfast with Santa” event. Students are there to greet him when he arrives and to show him where to go for the breakfast, crafts and pictures. This is a wonderful event for the families each year and this year was no exception. The food was delicious, the crafts were fun, the face painting was awesome and the pictures with Santa were great!
Bill Lloyd, ESE teacher at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition sings holiday songs with the first grade students. He played his guitar and sang many popular holiday tunes with the kids. The students and teachers all had a joyous time.
Third grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition enjoyed a demonstration by the Pt. St. Lucie Police Department K-9 unit. Students made a connection by reading a Journeys story about a police officer and his K-9 dog.
Demi Barnett, a kindergarten student in Isabelle Brunache’s class at Weatherbee Elementary enjoyed a special moment with Santa as she received the first gift of Christmas as a part of the kindergarten’s Polar Express literacy activity. Santa arrived with the support of the St. Lucie County Fire Department complete with a police escort. Snow fell from above to complete this special moment for Weatherbee students. What a wonderful way to make literature come alive.
